I ended up in Foz do Douro this afternoon, and took a bus to continue on my way to Porto centre. This was my view while I was waiting. Is there a more picturesque bus stop than this?
(I’ve written stacks of words to accompany this post, rewrote, erased, rewrote, and finally erased them all. Pictures trump words today. Click to enlarge any of them.)
Enjoy the view!

We may never leave Portugal.
Your time is so short! We’ll make the most out of it.
Hi Gail! I have been sharing your photos and commentary with a close friend, Victor Soares, who is of Venezuelan and Portuguese origins, now a Canadian citizen. He wrote this to me of his Ovar experience:
“Back in February 1983 I participated in the Ovar Carnivals. Our beach house is in an Ovar coast beach called Furadouro. About 40 people from those who remain year round in town formed the “comparsa” or group representing Furadouro. We didn’t win the big prize, we finished in third place but certainly I had the fun of my life. This was the only time I kept going for three days straight without sleeping. At the morning of the fourth day, when I left the building where we were closing up our celebrations, there was a shy lay of snow covering the ground (this is a new Canadian talking). Something that only happens four or five times a century, therefore it was time to swim naked. And so we did!
After three sleepless nights, all the alcohol and the weak state after all our carnival joys; the forceful and frigid open ocean waters dried out the little adrenaline left in our bodies. So, a 20 hour sleep was in the prescription. Boy, I just transported myself back 32 years. What a life time.
Ovar train station, on the other hand, served me for a semester, while I commuted between Ovar and Aveiro where I finished an accounting course. Although that time was not near as fun as what I described before, I have a vivid memory of the station and again, Gail is not short of adjectives to describe it extremely to detail. Let alone the photos.
What a great story about the craziness of Carnival! I love hearing these little trips down memory lane, and I have to say, Furadouro is a fantastic place to have a beach house. We were there in January and it was beautiful even then:

Hi, Gail
Is that a restaurant in on pictures? Do you still know the name of it? Just love to sit there?
Thanks,
k
It’s called Esplanada Praia dos Ingleses (that’s the name of the beach), and it’s more like a bar with snack food than a restaurant. Here’s the website:
