  1. 19th Century Literature Comes To Life On A Plate

    March 4, 2012 by Gail

The Count of Monte Cristo Dinner

This month’s One-of-a-Kind-Dinner was themed “The Count of Monte Cristo”, which brings to mind one thing for me: swashbuckling pirates. But this isn’t “Pirates of the Caribbean” the movie, this is a 19th century adventure novel by Alexander Dumas, and it is Chef Clint Rampold’s favourite book, he says.

We were not without swashbuckling pirates, of course.

The Count of Monte Cristo Dinner

    From Wikipedia:

The story takes place in FranceItaly, islands in the Mediterranean and the Levant during the historical events of 1815–1838 (from just before the Hundred Days through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. An adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy and forgiveness, it focuses on a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty.

Creating a multi-course dinner around the storyline of “The Count of Monte Cristo” is a rather tall culinary order, but Clint rose to the challenge. Here’s the menu:

And, the plates in all their glory. (I will add the course descriptions once I get the list.)

The One-of-a-Kind-Dinners are known for more than originality, they are a celebration of the arts, including dance, theatre, and music.

  2. Red Moon Collective Jam: The Preview

Wow. A roomful of talent at the Red Moon Collective’s monthly jam in Loft 210 (263 Adelaide Street). A proper post later, but for now 10 photos before I crash to recharge for a busy Sunday of talking all day at the Vintage Hotels annual wedding show, Niagara-on-the-Lake.

  3. Brie + Lavi

    February 16, 2012 by Gail

    Brie + Lavi

Brie + Lavi were married at a restaurant in Toronto in front of a roomful of friends and family on December 28, 2011, and there was much rejoicing :)

There were many things that I loved about this wedding. I loved that they made it about them and chose the details that made them happy. I converted all the uploads to black and white which means it won’t show all the details, like Brie’s red dress and the rainbow cake, but maybe I’ll add a couple of colour versions at the end.

    Brie before the ceremony:

Some of my favourite photos of the whole wedding are of Brie and her mom. They’re obviously very close, and they were dancing up a storm before the ceremony. It was cute!

The ceremony was a mix of their own vows plus Jewish wedding rituals:

Some of the best moments were the speeches:

    And of course the dancing:

And before I finish with the slideshow, here’s some colour — first up, Brie’s dress and unique manicure (skull and crossbones):

They made the wedding cake themselves, which looked like other wedding cakes on the outside but had a vibrant rainbow colour on the inside:

  4. Last Wedding Of 2011

    February 14, 2012 by Gail

    Brie + Lavi

I’ve just finished editing my last wedding of 2011 and I’m in love with the black and white conversions. In fact, once I blog this whole wedding it will be completely in black and white, which is a first — I usually blog a mix of colour and black and white.

Take these first two photos, for example: I am not even a fan of roses (of any colour), but as soon as I took these photos I knew I had to make them monochrome. And once I did just that, I fell in love with flowers I don’t even care about. Photography is magical, if you ask me.

  5. Aya + Kyle’s Engagement Shoot At The Beaches

    January 16, 2012 by Gail

    Aya + Kyle

a fine day in late November

Aya and Kyle live in New York City, and when they emailed me back in early October to set up an engagement session in Toronto near the end of November the first thought that popped into my head was: “I sure hope I can convince them to shoot outside.” I mean, it’s the end of November and the end of autumn — chilly and windy, the trees were pretty bare, and since they don’t live in Toronto I had one morning to work with, plus a rain date (turned out, it rained that day). But I still wanted to shoot outside because it always looks better, in my opinion.

I sent along some suggestions with links to photos that I’d taken in those places, and they decided on Ashbridges Bay Park and the eastern beaches. (Real estate agents and most of the locals call the area “The Beaches”, but you know what? We have beaches in the West End, too. Anyway…) Then I crossed my fingers.

You’ll see in the photos that we got really lucky — not only did the sun shine from the hours of 9-11 that Friday morning, the wind didn’t pick up by the lake until the end of our session. The set is best viewed as a full-screen slideshow,  or just sit back and watch the set autoplay at the bottom of the post. Clicking on the slideshow will take you to the thumbnails in Flickr.

    Reaganomics

This was taken at Jessica + Peter’s wedding at the Gladstone Hotel back at the end of August, where they had two live bands (Peter was in one of them, the Reaganomics). When I was editing the band pictures, I was thinking I’d like to photograph more live music. I did shoot live music last year, but I’d like to do more.

  8. What Happens When You’re In Love: The Sneak Peek

    December 19, 2011 by Gail

    floating on cloud nine

    Astrid + Navarre

When I saw Navarre do a heel-click spontaneously and effortlessly by the water, I was so impressed I made him do it again! What a great sport, he even indulged my request for some stunts on the ice. Clearly, he’s in love!

Navarre and Astrid braved some chilly temperatures and frigid wind for their engagement shoot at Harbourfront, but it was worth it. I’ll show you as soon as I can!

  9. More RadLab Edits

    December 11, 2011 by Gail

Not feeling so great today, it’s my third experience of I-feel-a-cold-coming-on in the past four weeks but I’ve managed to successfully stave off the first two incidences and woke up feeling fine the next day, despite being completely surrounded by sick people at the office and at my trip destinations. This time I may not be so lucky, but I’ve done everything I can to try and smother it with vitamin C (broccoli, tomatoes, oranges) and rest.

Otherwise, I’m still editing (surprise, surprise) and still enjoying RadLab. Here are a couple of before-and-afters. Click to view larger:

  10. Edited With Radlab

    November 28, 2011 by Gail

    Ashbridges Bay Park

    Ashbridges Bay Park

Enjoying my latest editing tool, RadLab from Get Totally Rad (out of California, natch), in a bid to make myself enjoy editing more (or hate it less). Haven’t been using RadLab long, but it’s definitely user-friendly, quick, and lighter on the hardware resources — all the things I want out of editing software. It’s a plugin, not an action, so you can preview everything instantly, including strengths for all adjustments. So far, so good, Radlab!
