Bridge of Light - will it ever be finished?

Today’s installment of pictures from my mobile phone has been brought to you by a combination of excellent weather and being awake and productive for nearly 24 hours. But now I am feeling mortal and fading fast so I leave you with scenery from my walk home with the odd shot from the car… and a car wash pic at the end.

  2. Kelley + Rob’s Engagement Shoot At Riverdale Park

    May 14, 2012 by Gail

Kelley + Rob's engagement shoot in Riverdale Park

Kelley and Rob picked the perfect day for an engagement shoot, and I took advantage of the bright spring weather to showcase as much COLOUR as I could, as you can tell by the editing. I found murals, tulips (which turned out to be Kelley’s favourite flower), and super-green grass as backdrops around Riverdale Park.

Although I was booked last year to shoot their destination wedding June 1, this was the first time we met due to scheduling. Now that we’ve done their engagement shoot, I’m really excited to be flying to Mexico at the end of the month to photograph their beach wedding!

Some of my favourites are below, the rest are best viewed as a full-screen slideshow, thumbnails, or as a smaller slideshow further below.

  3. Urban Paddler

    Don River

I took this photo last Sunday, just before the engagement shoot at Riverdale Park. It’s such an urban shot, with the Don Valley Parkway to the left and the new Bridgepoint Hospital (opening in 2013) looming over it. I’ve never been on this pedestrian bridge before, but it gave me a new view of the Don River and I was surprised to see a number of canoes and kayaks travelling along it. Makes me wonder if anyone would use the Don in their morning commute?

    Dumplingpalooza!

That’s right, I went back to Ding Tai Fung in Markham, where you can watch them make dumplings through a glass window. After the first trip last month, I knew what I wanted to order. Food coma, coming right up!

    Queen West

Easily the shortest title I’ve ever given a blog post.

My domain server went down last night so I gave up trying to update my website and went to bed. Tonight I arrived home after midnight from a meeting to find the cable internet down and in need of a reboot. I think technology is telling me to go to bed!

  6. Chalk The Block

I got wind of a community art project last Friday that could use some photos, so I headed over to Brockton Village (Dundas West) on Saturday to see what I could shoot for an hour. There I found artists chalking up the sidewalks, making pedestrians and cars take pause or slow down to look down. It’s the joint effort of local residents who wanted to animate their neighbourhood, which was part of a Jane’s Walk on Sunday.

I love community art. Just as it’s mentioned in the article, it helps neighbours get to know each other, especially people who would otherwise not meet. In a city of millions, it’s common not to know your neighbour, which is why events such as this are important for building community spirit.

The thing about chalk art graffiti is that it’s at the mercy of the weather, and although the weather was gorgeous on the weekend, I knew it wouldn’t last. That’s where I step in, as I’m used to doing for weddings, where it is my job to photograph the work of makeup artists, hairstylists, bakers, and chefs who put their heart and soul into creating works of art which last only one day. After a wedding, only the pictures remain. Chalk art is just as ephemeral. This is something I find incredibly exciting about photography — that I am able to preserve art to be enjoyed long after it’s destroyed or fades away.

    stop and read

The other thing about chalk art graffiti is that most of the chalk used at Chalk The Block is very light, which means I had to use HDR techniques to show the art properly. I’ve probably mentioned before that I’m not much of a fan of HDR, but can see its usefulness. I’ve applied the technique rather liberally to Saturday’s pictures.

Chalk The Block event photos are best viewed as a full-screen slideshow, thumbnails, or view smaller in the slideshow below.

I also took some non-chalk-art photos that day, some of my favourites are here:

  7. Sunday Stroll

    May 7, 2012 by Gail

They crossed the street in front of me, Mama Goose first and babies in a line behind, which would’ve made a perfect photo had I not been behind the wheel and had the camera in hand. Alas, it was cameraphone-delayed.

    Imagine this, but with geese:

If I’m going to work on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, I’d much rather be

    1. outdoors
    2. holding a camera
    3. with happy people in love

I got all three! More to come…

  10. Walking Home: Month 11

I’m probably due to switch up my walking home route, but the scenery is still photo-worthy along this one I’ve been taking since the late fall. It rained cats and dogs last night and today it was sunny and freshly green. And humid, too, which is a reminder of how humid this city gets, lest everyone forgets while grumbling about the temperatures before today. No use grumbling about weather, folks. There are plenty of other places to live where the sun shines year ’round, but you probably won’t want to live there.

One of my favourite trees is this big one at the edge of Liberty Village on King Street. Today when I was walking home the sun made it glow, casting a perfect green against the dark brick of the warehouse buildings. It was urban nature at its best.

And speaking of the change in season, it’s only been a few days since the company ice cream freezer arrived (Monday), but I’ve already made my second dip into it while performing a task nearby. Last year it was weeks between ice cream, now it’s mere days. Willpower, where ARE you??
