I borrowed a cottage on a lake north of Toronto for the weekend to recharge with some friends before three weekends in a row of weddings. (Thanks, N!)
I have to work on Friday, but the rest of the time is with this view.

It’s 2:30am and I have to be up in a couple of hours. I am going to be a complete zombie two days in a row, and I have a wedding client meeting up in Woodbridge after work. Oh dear.
So this’ll be quick. I found Vicky’s shoes a vintage-styled home for their photos on Saturday — hanging off a lamp in the kitchen, believe it or not.

The intersection at Keele and St. Clair was full of flag-waving Argentinians, so I should’ve guessed St. Clair West would be jammed because Argentina won their game Sunday, but I was dumb enough to land right in it. I’m happy for them, but my just-purchased containers of ice cream were melting in the traffic jam.
Like everyone else in this city, I’m embracing practically anything non-G20-related (Sunday was dismal, too).

Yesterday’s wedding was one of the most fun events I’ve ever shot, and much of the credit goes to the bridal party who were all from New Zealand. The Canadian groomsmen were no slouches, but special mention goes out to the Kiwis. This bunch were stellar!
I’m still going through the photos, there are around 1,800 of them…! Major shout-out to Jan, who was my hardworking second shooter yesterday.
++++++++++
There should Be T-Shirts: “I Survived G20 Saturday”
Who would be wearing these t-shirts?
… but especially the baby — she didn’t even wail!

This is a low-res camera (Canon A520), but you can just make out that there are two police officers with binoculars on top of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. They have a tent set up, too. I missed a motorcade going by on Front Street, but it’s not as if I’d ever find out who’s in it, anyway.
The atmosphere is very strange downtown around The Fence. First of all, it’s become somewhat of a ghost town compared to the usual hustle and bustle. There was still a rush hour the last few days, but because there are fewer cars it is eerily quiet — taxi drivers told me they avoided the fence; there is noticeably less honking. There are fewer pedestrians and cyclists, fewer bike couriers, and a major police presence. And it’s not ordinary police presence, either: the officers are all wearing riot gear and watching everyone very carefully. It’s enough to make a person feel a little paranoid.
TD Bank even removed all their deposit envelopes from their downtown branches. Why? So nobody would be able to deposit anything — money wouldn’t be able to accumulate in the machines and nobody could possibly deposit any dangerous materials. I only know this because someone at work tried to make a deposit today at the TD Centre, and there were no envelopes in sight.
This morning the CEO announced that most of The Firm would be working from home tomorrow — HALLELUJAH! — which means I can actually sleep past 5am, but in the afternoon I have to pick up equipment for Saturday’s wedding. Which means I have to trek across town through the G20 Summit zone again. Barring any sort of naturally- or unnaturally-occurring disaster, I should be able to get there within the two hours I’ve set aside to reach the place before it closes, when normally it would take me half an hour, tops.
You know what? It makes last summer’s 40-day garbage strike look like a walk in the park.

They look pretty calm now, but I heard they went berserk when the earthquake hit at about a quarter to two this afternoon. Xena was tearing around the house and Beano probably went into deep hiding.
I didn’t even feel it at all.
I was making myself a fruit salad in the kitchen at The Firm, slicing strawberries and minding my own business when one of the IT guys walked by and asked, “Didn’t you feel the earthquake a couple of minutes ago?”
I work in a company full of pranksters so I let that one go by. Earthquake? In Ontario? Last time I felt an earthquake I really FELT it — stuff was falling off the shelves. If I’d felt the building move, the first thought would be a bomb. I was certain all sirens would start blaring and the police state that we’re currently working in would escalate into a full-on emergency situation, complete with alleged links to terrorism. But nothing happened. Oh no, untrue: someone in the office claimed to have farted.
I was in Vancouver during two earthquakes, the first one was at night while I was fast asleep and it moved the bed across the floor! It was so forceful I thought a small airplane had crashed into my apartment building on Beach Avenue. The second one wasn’t much later, maybe only a year or two, and it was during the day when I was working from home. I remember thinking to myself, ‘Eh, earthquake”, and holding on to the shelf so it wouldn’t tip over but that was only because the second time I was wide awake and could comprehend the situation. Being woken by an earthquake is enough to give a person a heart attack.
Fancy wrote about it, she was much closer to the epicentre.
Oh, and there was also a tornado nearby tonight.
What’s next? Maybe the G20 fake lake will flood?

At 6am, the police officers outnumber everyone. I would show you but the last thing I want to do is point my cameraphone at the swarms of them in front of Union Station — I just want to get to work!
