  2. Birthday Beano

    April 30, 2010 by Gail

I was at the vet the other day to pick up food and injection supplies, and while I was there I inquired about Beano’s age. According to the vet records, Beano turned 16 years old yesterday! I don’t know how they arrive at the birth dates, if they just guess or if my friend Arliin actually knew, but either way that would make Beano the equivalent of a very, very old man. According to this chart, Beano would be 80! Thankfully he’s still frisky and showing no signs of slowing down, he just has a lot of gray hair now, like Yours Truly.

  5. Dawn Langstroth

    April 28, 2010 by Gail

Tonight was the first time I checked out Dawn Langstroth’s music, and I’m glad I did, finally. She’s got the chops and her songwriting compliments the qualities of her voice. If you’re Canadian you may already know her name — she’s Anne Murray‘s daughter. I’ve watched a few of her videos and at times I can see the resemblance in their faces and hear a little similarity in the timbre of their voices, but their vocal styles are quite different and Dawn’s music takes a darker tone, especially in the lyrics.

Check out Dawn’s website (the videos are better quality there than on YouTube). I especially like her acoustic version of “You Don’t Know Me”.

  7. The Right Side Of The Tracks

I have a thing for railroad tracks, although I don’t really have a collection to match (yet). More location scouting last Sunday drew me to these, near the reception venue. I’m hoping to convince the bride and groom (and the weather gods) that this is a good spot for some photos this weekend.

  8. Cathedraltown

I was driving south along Highway 404 from Markham when I spotted spires jutting into the sky, right in the middle of a new development. Of course, we had to stop and get a closer look! The development is so new that the roads aren’t even finished yet. The whole scene looked bizarre, I had to find out the story.

The cathedral is called Cathedral of the Transfiguration, and it’s not a cathedral anymore — the last service was in 2006. It’s still incomplete!

    Excerpt from Wikipedia:

The Cathedral of the Transfiguration is a Slovak Byzantine Rite Roman Catholic former cathedral located in the community of Victoria Square in Markham, Ontario, Canada. The cathedral was built in a rural area north of the city of Toronto and was built to serve Slovak Catholics throughout the Greater Toronto Area. The Cathedral was conceived and funded by Stephen B. Roman, a Slovak immigrant to Canada who had built up the Denison Mines corporation. Roman both funded and designed the building, modeling the structure on the church in Velky Ruskov, the Slovak village he was raised in. The cathedral was built on a donated portion of his Romandale estate.

Among its features is the world’s largest three bell carillon, with the French made bells weighing 32,000 pounds, and 300 cm diameter. The mosaics are reputed to contain about 5 million pieces. The cathedral was built to hold 1000 worshipers serving a community of about 5000 Byzantine Rite Catholics in the GTA and 35,000 across Canada. The central tower rises 63 metres (about 20 storeys) and is topped by a gold onion dome. The church was designed by Donald Buttress, a renowned architect whose claim to fame is overhauling Westminster Abbey.[1] It is a significant landmark east of the 404 highway.

National Post article, 2007: No Mass in Cathedraltown

It’s a shame this magnificent building isn’t finished (although neither is the Sagrada Familia, under construction since 1882), and off-limits to everyone.

  9. Back Online But Man, What A Malarky!

    • Saturday: arrived home from second High Park shoot and discovered no internet. Tried all the usual tricks and tests, to no avail, on Saturday and Sunday in the few minutes I was home.
    • Monday: finally got a moment to call the cable company (for the Canadians, that would be Rogers). They couldn’t get in a tech until Tuesday, so I offered to run out to a retail outlet and swap my cable box for a new one. Didn’t work. I said nobody else in my house has Rogers that I knew of, and Rogers confirmed this.
    • Tuesday: raced home early to meet tech. He discovered my cable switched with another one, in the stairwell. He switched it back, I got my data feed. Neighbour arrived home, said Rogers installed their equipment on Saturday, inadvertently unplugging my internet. They turned on their TV to discover they had no cable feed while I was plugged in. We BOTH called Rogers, who said my case was closed so the neighbour had to call the tech again…

In the meantime, the neighbours dug out a splitter so they could watch TV and I could be online. First of all, Rogers should have KNOWN they sent a tech here on Saturday to do an installation, it would’ve explained everything. And what was that tech doing swapping cables in the first place?? Nothing was labelled. After each of us called Rogers, we both got billing credits.

Now that I’m plugged in again, whoa email, I’ve got some catching up to do… I tried to deal with the urgent stuff by mobile phone, but much of it had to wait.

  10. Rejoice, It’s The Last Monday of April

    April 26, 2010 by Gail

What happened to April? I blinked and it was gone.

Called the cable company, it’s looking more like their equipment needs replacing. Hope so, I’ve had enough downtime and cameraphone pics to last me ’til… May?
