I’m creating a website for a client these days and the process reminds me of all the meetings I’ve ever been involved in where we try and build something that’s user-friendly, maintenance-friendly, budget-friendly, and functional. One time it was a client database, another time it was an Excel template that forecasted budgets, another project was to make a short film, to name a few. All very different things, but the processes to build them were rather similar, that is, someone had to explain to someone else how such-and-such doohickey software can’t do that or the typical outburst of “Can you make up your mind?” or “If you want this then you can’t have that”. I thank the stars this website isn’t design-by-committee this time — aren’t committees the most painful meetings you can imagine? Maybe a few gin and tonics would’ve helped.
Anyway, as I was saying, websites have taken over my life recently and after being forced to look at a million of them over the past few weeks for various reasons, I’m taking this opportunity to state how much I dislike Flash, especially on photography websites, and even worse: AUTO MUSIC on Flash websites. I’ve seen enough bad Flash to last me a lifetime, and having to hunt around a bad Flash site to locate the teeny tiny mute icon (if there is one!) is punishable by… by an equal amount of HOLD MUSIC… Kenny G! Michael Bolton! Zamfir!
