While hanging out with native New Yorkers, the term “Bridge and Tunnel” comes up every now and again. I’m often taking bridge and tunnel photos (everywhere, not just in New York), and when I review the photos I think of the phrase:

Bridge and tunnel (often abbreviated B&T) is a disparaging neologism for people who travel to Manhattan Island from surrounding communities, a commute that requires passing over a bridge and/or through a tunnel.
I think there’s a version of this in every major city that handles commuters during the week and suburban revellers on the weekends. In Toronto I’ve heard people refer to them as 905ers (416 and 647 being the Toronto area codes), and I’m sure there’s an assortment of other snobby phrases I’ve yet to learn.
