Tonight I had my first pedicure ever after work, thanks to the not-so-gentle persuasion from a bride whose wedding I’m shooting tomorrow. (“WHAT? YOU’VE NEVER HAD A PEDICURE BEFORE?!?”) It was such a momentous occasion that I sent a text to my fashionista friend Eliza in Vancouver to make the announcement. AND I took photos of the evidence, because she was going to find it hard to believe. I think this is only the third manicure I’ve ever had, as well.
I’m just not very girlie. In fact, the IT guys at work invited me out for dinner with them and I wavered before declining, feeling sheepish even admitting I had a mani/pedi appointment and that’s why I couldn’t join them. In any other situation it’s the last thing I would be doing, but I promised Beth I would take the plunge and do this one girlie thing for myself.
“Your feet will be so happy at the wedding, Gail!”
I met up with Beth and her friends at the salon, where they are apparently regulars and know all the staff. I, on the other hand, am a stranger to nail care (if you’ve seen my hands and feet this will be very obvious) and had no idea what to do first! Or second! Or even third! Picking a nail colour was about all I could do without assistance, and even then I needed assistance because I stared at the walls of polish rather blankly.
The nail ladies were forewarned about me, though: BE GENTLE WITH THE NEWBIE! With all the various instruments the procedure was like surgery, scalpels and everything. The attendant scraped so much off my foot that I told her she had enough material to make another foot. I sat in a massage chair with a controller while one foot soaked in a whirlpool spa and the other was getting the full treatment.
I chose a creamy lacquer for my hands and a very dark purple for my toenails, which look black in this picture. Here they are, all wrapped up and ready to make the journey home.
The Vietnamese ladies at the spa are were great, and I think this might turn into a semi-regular trip after all the long days of shooting I do. I have to say, between the simultaneous leg and hand massage I can see myself falling asleep in the massage chair while it’s on the “shiatsu” setting!
