The sun FINALLY made its spectacular debut on our last full day on Fire Island, with emphasis on the FINALLY… but better late than never, right? It was overcast yesterday, but the temperature has been pleasant with little wind and perfectly comfortable for exploring the island on foot.
Today we headed as far east as the community of Cherry Grove, opting for the beach route versus the boardwalk-through-town route so we could feel the sand between our toes. And inspect whatever washed up along the shore:

We also made a trip into the Sunken Forest, which is part of the nature preserve. It was beautiful but we were ambushed by mosquitoes who were famished and rather enormous. Needless to say, we didn’t hang out for very long there, otherwise we would’ve been sucked dry.

After exiting the Sunken Forest we continued east along the beach for a while, then followed a boardwalk back inland to the community of Cherry Grove. Cherry Grove is a very colourful place, and not just because there are rainbow flags everywhere… we arrived just in time to see the Drag Queen coronation (complete with national anthem!), but we were reluctant to pay the big cover charge. Especially after the free shows I saw in Cape Cod and the elaborate (and free) drag shows at Pride Weekend in Montreal last month.

We took a water taxi back to Ocean Beach and made a pit-stop at the neighbourhood pub before returning to the beach house and a pink sunset:
The weather’s supposed to be good tomorrow as well, so a half-day extension on the rental was requested and we’ll get to stretch out our vacations a little while longer.
