I had to do something unpleasant today, but I also booked a flight on JetBlue. Booking flights always cheers me up, and I’ve never flown on JetBlue before. Have you? If so, I’d like to hear your experience/opinion.

  3. Tube Rider

    Tube rider

    Central London, November 2007

I shot this at an ungodly hour of the morning on a weekday, along the Piccadilly line to Heathrow. The Tube had just opened, it was THAT early, hence his expression. He reminded me a lot of Clive Owen…

I like shooting random strangers, if I can be stealthy about it. It’s the stealthy part that’s not so easy, especially with a large lens.

In other news, I received THREE more postcards of the Grand Canyon today, from the nieces this time (the twins shared a postcard). Very, very cute! I’d scan them but right now I’m in dire need of sleep so that’s where I’ll go.

  4. 7th Blogiversary Cake!

    July 28, 2009 by Gail

My blog is seven years old today! The above is a cameraphone pic of a cake I shot in New York City, December 20, 2006. It’s very “Gail at Large”, wouldn’t you say?

This blog has benefited me in many ways, not the least of which has been to connect me with many interesting people who I’d never have met otherwise. A recent example of this is from my Ottawa road trip the other weekend when I met up with two well-travelled people through totally different channels: Zhu, a multilingual expat blogger from France, and Lisa, an Ottawa native who was referred to my blog by someone else and works in the aviation industry. Who knew when I started writing in this space that in seven years it would morph from a working university student blogspot-templated rant to a mostly pictorial account of my ever-evolving life filled with cameras, airplanes, cats, code-tweaking, and blurry cameraphone shots of food? Certainly not me!

Speaking of travel, I got a very cute postcard today from my nephew, I’ll scan it after I get home later… which I’m sharing with you because it brought a big smile to my face and if it doesn’t bring one to yours I’ll be a monkey’s uncle (auntie?):

postcard from my nephew Michael, age 8

Aww, poor Kermit, he’s probably got heatstroke!

Michael and I had a funny conversation on the phone a couple of days before their road trip. (Bear in mind he’s a little over a month away from turning nine years old.) Here’s a snippet:

Me: “Have all my postcards arrived yet?”
Michael: “We got one from Bra… Brats… Brat-sylvia.”
Me (chuckling): “You mean Bra-ti-sla-va. Do you know where that is?”
    Michael: “No. Where is it?”
Me: “Slovakia. Do you know where Austria is?”
Michael: “That’s where Beethoven is from. But I don’t know where Austria is. I’m only in Grade 3, Auntie Gail, Geography is in Grade 5.”

Earlier in July, when I phoned Melissa for her 10th birthday, she told me they got my postcard from Rome.

Me: “Do you know where Rome is?”
    Melissa: “I’ve heard of it.”
Me: “Have you heard of the Pope?”
Melissa: “Yes, he lives at church.”

Maddy (nearly eight) was too busy plotting world dominance playing to stop and talk to me. The twins (age five) are talking like crazy and say funny things, but they don’t like to talk on the phone… yet, anyway. Once they do, I’ll be sure to post the gems.

  5. Welcome Back, Jan!

    July 27, 2009 by Gail

Jan is back, Natalia's internal wattage is up 1000%

Jan is back from Germany, which makes Natalia the Sunbeam burn even brighter. In fact, it looks like her internal wattage is up by 1000%! A bunch of us gathered for the usual Pho Hung(ry) cheap ‘n’ cheerful Vietnamese to greet Jan and to satisfy vegetarians and dead-cow-lovers alike.

Jan even brought us all treats: (more…)

  6. Late Night Snackery

    July 27, 2009 by Gail

I always try to keep a tin of chickpeas/garbanzo beans in the house. This is what I like to eat if I get hungry while working late.

  8. Website #8: Fashions By Pearl

    July 25, 2009 by Gail

    Picture 4

I’m working on website #9 and renovating one of my own websites (Image Legacy), but here’s what I worked on late Friday night/early Saturday:

    http://www.fashionsbypearl.com

It’s still a site-in-progress (I’ll replace the feather and make my own GIF), but at least it has the basic info. Other than trying to catch up on projects, I did a lot of sleeping on Saturday. A LOT. Except for one night in Ottawa last weekend, for weeks I’ve been going to bed at either 4, 5, or 6 o’clock in the morning and averaging 4-5 hours of sleep because I keep working and learning. It’s a good thing my sleep is high-quality.

  9. Oysters @ Brassaii Bistro

    July 24, 2009 by Gail

You can deduce from the blurriness of this cameraphone picture that I was in a hurry to eat those oysters. Usually I’m Steady Eddy.

Dax got a great shot of the sign with his iPhone while he was waiting for me:

  10. TGIF Mojito

    July 24, 2009 by Gail

I was scoping out the place for a wedding I’m shooting there in a couple of months. The fact that they serve mojitos is a definite bonus! It was a welcome minty end to the week.
