  7. Relay For Life 2009 — please sponsor me!

    May 28, 2009 by Gail

I’m doing this year’s Relay For Life to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society. I just set up my personal page:

    http://convio.cancer.ca/goto/gailatlarge

We’re doing the overnight relay wearing “reject” gowns from The Brides’ Project, so stay tuned for photos of me with a really ugly wedding dress :) I’ll pick one out next week and maybe even give you a preview!

Our team page is here: http://convio.cancer.ca/goto/thebridesproject

Here’s a video of The Brides’ Project Team from 2008.

Relay For Life takes place at Forest Hill Memorial Park on June 12, from 7pm to 7am. That’s two weeks from tomorrow!

    Relay For Life

If you’ve never heard of Relay For Life, here’s the scoop:

Relay For Life is a 12 hour, non-competitive, overnight event. Teams of 10 people – family, friends, neighbours, co-workers – take turns walking around a track to raise funds to make cancer history.

The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease.

Relay is fun, fulfilling, and your participation gives strength to our mission to eradicate cancer. Walk with us in this inspirational 12-hour overnight event.

We’ll have a tent set up, plenty of snacks and drinks to keep us going, and it’ll be a lot of fun staying up all night together! If you can’t join us, we would love your sponsorship of any amount.

  9. One Week: The Movie

One Week – movie trailer by movietrailer09

I haven’t seen a Canadian movie for a while, I usually catch some on the Canadian movie channel on Air Canada flights. I wanted to see “One Week” when it first came out, but I missed it. The Revue Cinema, my neighbourhood movie house, posted on Twitter that they were going to show it tonight, so I mentioned it to some friends over dinner and a few of us headed out afterwards to watch it.

I knew the premise of the film (young guy gets cancer diagnosis, travels from Toronto on a motorcycle to the furthest point west on the Trans-Canada Highway, which is Tofino), so I’d already braced myself for some possible tough moments reliving the cancer diagnosis nightmare. But I’m also a sucker for a road trip movie. And I love seeing Canada in films (as Canada, not a stand-in for anywhere else). I’ve heard a CBC Radio interview with the filmmaker. I was curious.

Did I enjoy “One Week”? Yes.
Would I watch it again? No.
Did it make me think? Yes, but not about the film, only the subject matter.
Would I recommend it to someone else? Depends.

  10. Music Monday: Monday Monday

    May 25, 2009 by Gail

Because I have more than 700 photos and umpteen videos to process from the weekend, which I’m still recovering from, PLUS a bizarre day today — most of which was spent observing the judicial processes in Ontario provincial court — I will leave you with a video of the Mamas & The Papas from 1966 singing their ode to Mondays.

    How was YOUR Monday?
