Howe Sound At Night
February 27, 2009 by Gail
I love long exposures. They take a while to set up properly and even longer to get a satisfactory shot, but it’s worth the patience.
The ski runs of Cypress Mountain are to the left, and the lights of West Vancouver and Vancouver to the right. There’s a tugboat or some other smallish vessel cruising through the inlet and leaving behind a light streak. I shot this at 9:38pm on Thursday night and just missed catching the last ferry run from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale by about 30 seconds, but I’ll try again next time.

Someone’s Been Drinking The Silly Juice
February 26, 2009 by Gail
One of my favourite photo subjects, because he brings the silly and not the grumpy. Maybe I should try sleeping 12 hours each night, like he does. I passed out unusually early last night (10pm!) and got 10 hours, but I could still use some more sleep. Oh, and the energy of a five-year old.

I’ve Had It Up To Here
February 24, 2009 by Gail
I’m posting this out of amusement rather than complaint, but it’s also true that my entire Monday has been eclipsed by work. I didn’t take a single photo today. I’m hoping to post more than one photo at a time soon, because there are so many I’d love to share from the weekend.
In case you’re wondering where “here” is, it’s up this tower near the letter Q and WHOA did I ever fight vertigo on the staircase!

Umbrella Time
February 23, 2009 by Gail
Miss Megan Joy, with her new flying piggy umbrella that I bought her for a belated fifth birthday present. It was at Maribeth’s suggestion because she says Megan loves pigs. (Thank you, Maribeth!) I took Maribeth on a belated birthday outing, just the two of us, which included shopping to find her a set or two of sheep pyjamas, to no avail. You’d think sheep would be the easiest animal to find on jammies, but alas, no.
I think I jinxed myself with talking about consistently sunny skies, as it rained parts of Sunday. I should follow my own advice and never talk about the weather again! But it did work nicely with my plan to take the whole gang ice skating sometime during my trip. I balanced myself precariously on skate blades AND held an expensive camera AND a child to keep her steady… yikes! Didn’t fall once, but I’ll have to post the photos at a more reasonable hour.
For now, one more umbrella shot with Megan. The photo above was straight off the camera, and the one below is obviously retouched but only a little bit.

Howe Sound
February 21, 2009 by Gail
A photo I shot from the office window Friday afternoon facing Howe Sound. See that mountain range up ahead? At the base of those mountains, where they meet the Pacific Ocean, is the Sea-to-Sky Highway — the road to Whistler. In about a year, that road is going to be absolutely JAMMED with vehicles for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Where I’ll be in one year I have no idea, except it won’t be anywhere near Vancouver.
It was another brilliantly sunny day, the kind you wish was a Saturday or a Sunday instead of a weekday. I’ve been lucky, though, all the trips I’ve made to Vancouver in the last year have been filled with sunshine nearly every single day. I know people love to talk about how much it rains here, but when I think back over the trips I remember marvelling that I brought an umbrella or a rain jacket and never used them. There was a short-lived sprinkle here and there and cloudy weather, but not a single day of full-on rain.
To test the perception of a perpetual raincloud hanging over Vancouver threatening to drown everyone, I counted all the days I spent in Vancouver in 2008. And you know what? Over four trips the days totalled more than TWO MONTHS! Which is certainly an ample amount of time to calculate a rainfall average. In those two months of Vancouver weather, there was barely any rain, maybe three days total with more than a sprinkle.
Here’s the picture proof from my photosets, shot through every season:
Apr 2-10 (9 days)
Jul 5-15 (11 days)
Sep 8-22 (15 days)
Nov 20-Dec 15 (26 days)I take photos every single day while I’m on the road, so it’s not as if the rainy days are unchronicled. But they were certainly well outnumbered — by a long shot — in 2008.
