  1. Five For Fighting

    January 31, 2009 by Gail

    young fans

There’s no denying I live in HockeyTown Canada. There are rabid hockey fans all over the country, but there’s a significant concentration of them here. It was really just a matter of time before I found myself at a hockey rink to see some guys chase a puck around and throw some punches when they felt like making the crowd roar (without the benefit of a goal). When in Rome and all that. Thing is, I’m not about to pay exorbitant ticket prices to watch the Leafs in the NHL (although I’m open to invitations if you’d like to share a complimentary pair of tickets with me), but I’ll certainly pay the equivalent of a restaurant meal to watch the local AHL team the Toronto Marlies play (Rochester’s) Rockford IceHogs. Sure!

I was going to write a big post about hockey in general and throw in my two pennies about the marketing of professional sports, but I’ve got a big roadtrip tomorrow and I need to sleep more than I need to expound. So here is my bullet-point version:

    • called up my hockey-playing Aussie neighbour 20 minutes before the 4pm game and he came along
    • scored two tickets for $10 from someone getting rid of a pair
    • witnessed at least EIGHT players get sent to the penalty box for fighting
    • some of my favourite plays were by the little kids from Whitby
    • final score: Marlies soundly pounded by the IceHogs 5-2

The bullet-point version comes with a corresponding small number of uploaded photos due to awful white balance for the Ricoh Coliseum that needs fixing. But first things first: roadtrip! I’ll be mobile blogging for a bit.

  3. Look What Fell Out Of The Fridge

    January 31, 2009 by Gail

look what fell out of the fridge

This is what a black cat has to do to get some attention around here! How about some more pictures of meeeeeee-e-e-e! It’s Beano, Beano, Beano all the time on this site… what are you saying? Who are you calling “too dark”? This is Canada, you know, you can’t say those sorts of things, or I’ll have to start with some affirmative action and sic a tribunal on you. Need more light, you say? OK, I know of a place where I can get more light… it’s called a fridge.

Xena! Get out of the way! (Is it just me, or do Xena’s paws look far too small to support her body? They’re tiny!)

  6. How The House Of Fielding Keeps Warm

    taking this shot involved contortion

Taking this shot with a cameraphone involved some contortion and guesswork. I shot it in landscape and had to rotate the photo online.

    And here’s something altogether new:

if I look out the skylight, there will be pigs flying

If I had looked out the skylight, I would’ve seen pigs flying. I’ve had Xena and Beano for one year, and I’ve NEVER seen them snuggle together like this before…

  7. Square Crops

    January 29, 2009 by Gail

    Justin Ruttan

Count me in as a longtime fan of square photos. I cropped both of these photos to make them square, but you can buy square-format film cameras in a variety of makes and models — a Hasselblad if you have several thousand dollars or more burning a hole in your pocket. If you want a digital version of the latest Hasselblad, you’re looking at around $30,000+ US.

One of these photos took more editing than expected, and the other one took less editing than expected. Can you figure out which was which, and why? When I get more time I’ll write out my setup for both.

  9. Snowshoeing At Scenic Caves Nordic Centre

    January 28, 2009 by Gail

Backtracking to last Saturday, I’ve finally uploaded nearly all of the photos of our snowshoeing trip to Collingwood. Apparently I was quite snap-happy, because there are 85 photos in this album thus far and I never upload all my photos to Flickr.

The others stayed over on Friday night so we could get an early start, since Collingwood is a two-hour drive and none of us had been to the Scenic Caves Nordic Centre before. We had an unexpected detour to the wrong side of Georgian Bay (oops, nobody was paying attention), and the weather near Collingwood was blowing snow, which didn’t bode well. Also, it was cold enough that — just like two weeks ago enroute to Barrie — frost was forming on the inside of my car windows, frost that had to be scraped off to see! But, we were undeterred…

We were cheerfully rewarded at Blue Mountain with clear blue skies and powder snow. (Note to self: buy a polarising filter for the 17-55mm lens! I only have a 62mm polarising filter, which is for my Pentax 28-135mm.) The conditions were absolutely perfect for snowshoeing, and we were stoked! The trails weren’t crowded with people, and I could shoot the suspension bridge and Georgian Bay without waiting for people to move.

I did manage to slide into a hole on the other side of the bridge underneath a picnic table, though:

  10. Wayne Cho Is Running Across Canada

    January 28, 2009 by Gail

    http://www.crosscanadarun.com/

Wayne Cho is running across Canada to raise awareness for anxiety and depression, and he’s currently in Toronto. He set off from Newfoundland on May 23 of last year and by the time he reaches BC, he will have run 8,400 kilometres!

Why is he doing it? From his About page:

The purpose of my run across Canada is to raise awareness for anxiety and depression, which affect a significant portion of the population but are often misunderstood and neglected.

I want to run across the country to talk to people who are currently battling anxiety and depression and share their stories. I want them to let people know that these illnesses can happen to anyone, and they do. I want to talk to people who have fought off anxiety and depression to see how they did it. I want to ask some passionate health care professionals to share the facts about the illnesses: the symptoms, their courses and the resources available to combat the illnesses. Ultimately, I want the average person to know about anxiety and depression like they know about the flu.

The fight is close to home for me. I have suffered from General Anxiety until the age of 30, when I took up long-distance running and began to have my anxiety under-control. Growing up, I always began the day with this intense worry feeling in my guts that something was going to go wrong and I worried about everything. I didn’t know that what I had was anxiety until I went back to school to study psychology. Ironically, that was a year after I began running and discovered that I could control my worries.

You can support Wayne’s mission in various ways: by contributing your skills, donating, or by spreading the word.
