The Hay Hotel
I had some interesting accommodation on this trip, including a little cabin in Norway and sleeping on a bed of hay in a stable in Germany (”heuhotel”). I’m still picking out bits of hay from my stuff!
All up, it was:
- 3 nights on 2 couches (Oslo, Hamburg)
- 2 mattresses on 2 floors (Oslo)
- 3 bunk beds (Norway: Harmar, Akkerhaugen, Flam)
- 2 nights on hay in a sleeping bag (German farm near Wolterdingen)
- 1 night in a leather airline seat (Air Transat, Toronto-Hamburg)
For Oslo, I used Couchsurfing.com to arrange our accommodation. More on prices and accommodation after I put up the corresponding trip photos.

so, is this an actual business, or do you just call a barn a hay hotel when you sleep in it?

It is an actual farm with chickens, horses, probably cows and goats (which I didn’t see, but I was pretty sure I smelled cows), but the larger buildings have been converted to event venues and bed-and-breakfast and they work with a caterer. There are small holiday houses on the property, places to pitch tents and set up RVs. The stables are converted to sleeping areas with soft hay, which was our cheapest non-tent alternative — I paid 15 euros per night including breakfast.
It’s very kid-friendly, too, with a trampoline, playground, sandbox and toys. I tried to find a website for it to link to, but couldn’t find one. There are other converted farms with heuhotels around Germany (and the rest of Europe) that are similar.
