30 May 2008 The Snoopy Music Box, 41 Years Later

David used to poke fun at this music box: "My mother put me to sleep with a war song!"

Awwww.

David would have turned 41 years old today, so to celebrate, I went flying! Flying photos forthcoming.

Sunset In Rearview

As I pulled into the driveway of my friends’ house near Lake Wallenpaupack, Pennsylvania, about half past midnight or so, the thought occurred to me: “Damn, I just got in my car and drove for eight hours straight!”

Which sounds ridiculous, but I’ve done it so many times it doesn’t seem like much of an accomplishment anymore. It’s not even close to my record (14.5 hours), but still — that’s a lot of driving, especially by myself, left to my own amusement. I am apparently quite easily amused.

The drive normally takes just over six hours, but the traffic was so heavy it took ONE HOUR to drive 20 miles (32 kms), from my house to Hamilton. It took me two hours just to reach the border, and ordinarily it’s about 1.25 hours (73.5 miles, or 118 kms)! I was making good time until I hit Syracuse, which is usually a breeze to drive through, but I got caught for nearly half an hour in a snarl caused by a horrendous crash involving at least two vehicles — which no longer resemble cars but twisted pieces of strewn metal mixed with glass. When you see a collision like that, you automatically slow down and put both hands on the wheel.

28 May 2008 Duffy’s “Mercy”

I like the Welsh singer Duffy’s retro sound and the dancing in this video. (She’s also got a killer set of dimples.)

Long live Motown!

“With or Without You” from “U2 Medley” by Doyle Dykes. Sungha Jung is 10 years old at this recording, believe it or not. You might be thinking “hey, anyone can learn one song really well”, but do a YouTube search and you’ll see many other uploaded songs played by Sungha, including this one — Eric Clapton/Sting/et al’s “It’s Probably Me” (one of my favourite songs):

WOW. I hope all this talent Sungha has gets channelled the right way; he has a bright future ahead of him.

26 May 2008 Thank You Notes

hit snooze

Today (Sunday night) all the crazy hours of the past five days or so caught up with me and I had a five hour nap! I really needed it. The weather in Toronto the past couple of days has been incredible and the weekend was packed with activities! I’m still downloading photos from the memory cards.

I’ve taken a few pictures of some nice thank you notes from the past four days. Cards and notes and white board messages get lost and wiped off, so at least I’ve got them saved somewhere in picture form.

I found a card with a message inside on Wednesday morning:

found Wednesday morning

A note from Rory and Marisol, who just finished the last semester of Rory’s degree in Vermont and are driving back to Phoenix, their current home base. Their future home base will be Mexico. They stayed with me a couple of nights (Monday and Tuesday), before getting up at the crack of dawn on Wednesday to make the drive to Chicago in one day. Garry and I took them to Chinatown on Monday night, where we had dinner, and then back around Queen Street, stopping at Nathan Phillips Square to take pictures of City Hall.

24 May 2008 Too Much Sugar, Methinks

Friday night

It’s 6 o’clock on Saturday morning and I have yet to go to bed. Why? I think my body is in some form of sugar shock.

A bunch of us invaded Maria’s place like a band of modern-day pirates, except we didn’t make off with anything except bellies full of nachos, pasta, cocktails, champagne, and a variety of chocolate, including the shipment of Dove chocolate that arrived at my door 12 hours earlier.

I don’t have enough brainpower to upload more than two photos from the evening, even though I’ve got heaps of good ones. The rest will have to wait! But this one of Nadja the Chocoholic basically sums it up:

I think Nadja likes chocolate

My three visitors got stuck in traffic across the border and arrived around 4am, so they are all out like a light now. Even the cats are impatiently waiting for me to go to bed. Beano’s laying across my arm as if to say, “I’ll just cut off the blood flow to your fingers, then you’ll go numb and stop typing, right?”
