You might be wondering why on earth I was at Bass Pro Shop yesterday… me, too! Actually, it was a precursor to an engagement shoot in the SNOW! *gasp* I know, it was bloody cold!
If you are anywhere in Ontario (or most of the country, for that matter), you’ll know that yesterday was bitterly cold and quite windy and today wasn’t much better. The wind chill factor made for some speedy setting up of shots, a camera that didn’t want to focus (well, the circuitry, anyway), and some improvisation. Peter and Lauren were good sports, though, and they should be since it was their idea to shoot outside in the first place! But I’m glad we did it, because it’s an unusual challenge and it was an otherwise beautiful sunny day — best enjoyed in the great outdoors. And we did spot a couple of deer! If they were any closer, I would’ve tried to bribe them into joining the photo shoot.
Lots of credit goes to James, who tagged along to get out of the city (we were at Kortright Conservation Centre) and was recruited to carry a stool, bags, hold reflectors, and a white balance card. What a trouper!
As a preview, I’ve uploaded a black and white version of one of the jumping shots while I work on processing the batch. It looks like they’ve sprung off a trampoline, but it was all in the angle — I was below them on an incline, practically kneeling in the snow.
By the end of it (we began around 11:30 and finished near 3pm) toes were numb, clothes were wet, and people were shivering, but we warmed up quickly with spicy Thai and Vietnamese food before calling it a day around 4:30.
That said, I’m looking forward to the wedding shoot! (It’ll be warmer, unless it snows in October!)
