It’s COLD! And WINDY! Something I don’t mind about the winter, though, is coming in from the chill by ducking in someplace warm and cozy after work to meet up with people over food and bevs. Tonight was cocktail night at B Espresso on Queen Street East, a place recommended by the irrepressible Maria (aka Matchmaker Maria). I couldn’t stay the whole evening because I was due to take photos over at the Giggleshorts Festival in the Brunswick Theatre, but I did indulge in a good many ‘aperitivos’ to go along with my joey di seras. I spent the rest of the evening taking photos and watching comedy short films — a good way to round out Thursday and kickstart the weekend, I’d say.

The Short Film Project
November 29, 2007 by Gail
I watched a demo of video editing on a laptop computer projected onto a large screen this evening, to get a feel for the editing process I’ll be working through after our film gets shot. I’ve done small-scale video editing for my own clips that I put on my website, but I want to learn more advanced software with higher-end equipment. I’ll probably need to upgrade my computer if I want to install video editing software like Final Cut Pro, but in the meantime I’ll probably be editing with other people’s PCs.
To answer somebody’s question to me yesterday, these short films may or may not be made public, it depends largely on how they turn out and what the film group decides to do with them. Who knows, if they’re good enough maybe they’ll attract a buyer and get distributed or possibly turn into a commercial of some kind. It’s unlikely you’ll see me in a film, though, as I’m happy to leave the acting to others — I’d much rather write, shoot, or edit a film than be in front of the camera. Editing is incredibly painstaking and not many people enjoy it or have the patience for it, but once I’m involved I’m truly engrossed and lose all track of time. I’m here to learn through trial-and-error, practice, and getting to know the process inside and out. I think it’ll be a great winter activity! Shoot outside in the elements! (I do that, anyway.)
Speaking of commercial, a rep at a stock photography company contacted me through Flickr to see if I’d be interested in contributing my images for commission. I’d normally ignore this sort of email as a form of marketing, but she actually linked directly to five of my photos, so it wasn’t merely a targeted mass emailing. I’d looked into this fairly recently on another site, but my camera’s resolution didn’t meet their requirements for minimum image sizes. This particular site has a lower minimum resolution with a wider price scale, so maybe it’s time to revisit the stock image revenue stream idea.

Me, Not Cleaning
November 28, 2007 by Gail
I’ve been on a roll for the past three days, cleaning and rearranging and tidying up my apartment after work when I’d much rather be processing photos or writing about the trip to Morocco or pretty much anything else. But, I’ve got a momentum going and I can’t stop now or I’ll never finish. This place is actually looking less like a storage unit and more like a home. Must. Finish.! Tonight is Toronto Short Film Project night.
So, a pic from a month ago playing with the remote control, as motivation to hurry up and finish so I can post more trip photos instead of leaving a boring photo of me looking at the remote control.

OK Go – Here It Goes Again
November 27, 2007 by Gail
This looks like a lot more fun than running on the treadmill, doesn’t it? OK Go can also be found here.
This musical diversion brought to you by The Best of YouTube podcast, and TTC delays.
In recent days it seems like I’ve been held hostage by the TTC with crawling subways, streetcars not evening showing up at all, and more delays. This morning I even had enough time to hear at least eight episodes of the How Stuff Works podcast, and after work I listened to the latest show — #63 — of The Unharshed Mellow with Seuss and Addie. That’s a lot of iPod time, TTC!

Merenid Tombs, Fez
November 27, 2007 by Gail
The light was unusual that afternoon, especially around sunset. View larger.
When I was a kid, I read a lot. (All three of us did.) It was because I couldn’t go anywhere — my parents didn’t have the money to travel, so reading was the closest I got to travel. But I always felt that reading wasn’t a substitute for the firsthand experience.
I still feel that to be true. Even photographs are no substitute, but if they encourage people to travel, I’m pleased to share them.

Vegetarians, Look Away!
November 26, 2007 by Gail
You may recall on Day 3 in Morocco I mentioned some Moroccan delicacies such as sheep’s brains being cooked up in the food markets — fresh! — right before your very eyes. Well, here are the visuals for any interested parties with a bit of a cast-iron stomach:
Marrakech: I wandered around some food stalls in Djemaa el-Fna, trying to decide on what to eat. I gave the brains a miss. Want a closer look?
I found a little space between some Moroccan ladies for a clear shot of what could have been dinner, but immediately my reaction was, ‘um, I think I’ll pass…’

Some Weekend Photos
November 25, 2007 by Gail
Friday night I had a hankering for sushi. If only I could’ve transported myself to Vancouver for some Samurai sashimi! The sushi we had in London was good, but after a week of Moroccan food and five flights of airline food from Ryanair, Easyjet, and Air Canada, I was more than ready for fish again.
While I was on my way to Eaton Centre after work, I stopped by Nathan Phillips Square to take some photos of the Christmas tree before the big lighting event on Saturday that I would miss because I was due to dine on Moroccan food. (That sounds a bit funny coming on the heels of the previous paragraph.) I also got into an interesting conversation about entrepreneurship with a lady I met in the square who happened to be the author/illustrator of a book about aliens, which is either an example of the randomness of people one meets when one is carrying a camera or just talking to strangers in general. I do both, so I suppose this effectively doubles my chances for randomage.
At the Japanese restaurant, my sushi-hankering got the better of me and I ordered about six plates of various izakaya-style menu items, including agedashi tofu, gyoza, and (above) spicy tuna on eggplant. For those people who aren’t too keen on raw fish, don’t let that stop you from eating at a Japanese restaurant! There are plenty of dishes that are fully cooked.

A Week Ago I Was Trying Not To Get Stepped On By Donkeys
November 24, 2007 by Gail

The hardest-working Moroccan has got to be the donkey, it’s always overloaded. If you’re wondering where the Morocco photos are, I’ve been trying to rejig my entire photo library because I shot mostly in RAW format and my hard drive is nearly full. So I’m transferring my Iceland photos over to an external drive and moving folders here and there. What a job.
But I have to stop now because I’m going to a… drum roll… Moroccan restaurant for dinner! (No pigeon pie on the menu, I see. They use chicken! I’ll have to tell you about my pigeon pie experience later.)
Yesterday I walked into the office and blurted out the words, “It’s hard to believe only a week ago I was trying to avoid getting stepped on by donkeys.” I think those words will be following me around for a while; shortly after I said it someone peeked around the corner and brayed.
The most common form of transportation in Morocco is probably the moped/scooter/motorbike, which also gets overloaded but at least they don’t leave poop for pedestrians.
The Morocco photo album thus far: as thumbnails, or as a slideshow.

Kinetic Sculpture
November 23, 2007 by Gail
This morning I was stuck on a delayed subway for about 45 minutes with no reading material. Watching movies on the iPod Touch made the time fly. This is one of my favourites.
Theo Jansen is the Dutch creator of what he calls “Kinetic Sculptures,” where nature and technology meet. Essentially these sculptures are robots powered by the wind only.

Accents on Toronto 6
November 23, 2007 by Gail

a crappy-cam picture of the comedy lineupThe House of Fielding’s been rather hectic lately, since the conclusion of the Morocco trip. Haven’t had much time to process photos, write, or even do laundry — and we all know I’d rather do the first two things before I’ll do laundry. Last night I joined a second group in the Toronto Short Film Project, and hopefully if we can iron out the script we drafted in our first sitting, we’ll be shooting sometime next week. Wednesday is set aside for filmmaking, and Thursday was all about comedy!
Just before the trip, I heard a bit of Jean Paul‘s standup comedy routine on CBC Radio to promote Accents on Toronto 6. His piece was hysterically funny (to me, anyway), and I bought tickets for the show just before I left for my trip.
Here’s the lineup of performers:
Dini Dimakos: http://www.dinidimakos.com
Jean Paul: http://www.jeanpaul.ca
Nefarious Black Roses: http://nefariousblackroses.com
Arthur Simeon: http://myspace.com/bishopcomedy
Richard Ryder: http://richardryder.ca
Frank Spadone: http://frankspadone.comA bunch of us got something to eat near the hall before the show and made a whole evening of it. I think opinions differed on who had the best routine, but I liked all the standup comics (Nefarious Black Roses were more performance artists) and thought they were worth every penny and more of the ticket price.
