Penn and Teller’s Diatribe on Bottled Water
October 10, 2007 by Gail
Earlier this year, Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki went on a tour across the country to, as he puts it, “… tap into basic concerns that Canadians have about the environment, and then bring those messages to Ottawa.” One of those issues is about the threat to the environment that plastic bottles pose in terms of pollution, potential health hazards of plastic, and to raise awareness of the need to support a healthy local water supply.
February 1, 2007: Buying Bottled Water is Wrong, says Suzuki
If you want to hear Penn & Teller’s version on the debate, you’ll find it compressed into 12 minutes and 45 seconds in the YouTube video. If you’re not already familiar with their, um, occasionally colourful choice of language, consider yourselves warned.

Passport Canada Delivers Using Muppet Mail
October 10, 2007 by Gail
This post title brought to you by Chartreuse Monkey.
The new passport arrived on Tuesday, the original delivery date. It was too late for the funeral in France, though (held Monday).
I’ve crossed the U.S. border three weekends in a row while I was waiting for the passport, using my driver’s license which is officially supposed to be accepted until Summer 2008 at the earliest, after which USCIS requires passports from Canadians at land and sea borders. But, ironically they still always ask for my current passport (valid until December) and IGNORE the fact that Passport Canada cut the corners so it doesn’t get used. Go figure.
The balloon is from a government-sponsored convention I attended a couple of weeks ago. I think Passport Canada should include one with every new passport!
