  1. A Bit of David Always With Me

    August 14, 2007 by Gail

how would you fly without wings?

The box which held David’s ashes until they were scattered over the Hudson Valley in upstate New York last year. The box now holds David’s British aviator goggles, scarf, and leather helmet.

To take this picture I used the Pentax K100D (digital) body with my favourite prime, David’s 50mm f/1.7 Pentax manual focus lens. I specifically bought the K100D so I could still use David’s Pentax K-mount lenses, but it has proven to be a good investment all ’round. I think he would have approved.

  2. Introducing Sigma 28-135mm

I’m shooting a wedding on Saturday, so I’ve been comparing prices online and browsing Craigslist to see if I can find a flash and a wide-angle lens for the Pentax K100D. I’d love a Fisheye for the wedding, but that’s a pipe dream right now.

    • I found a flash through Craigslist, but it’s only $60 off the list price at Henry’s.
    • I drooled over a 12-24mm yesterday, but at $750 (on sale at Henry’s), I had to back off.
    • Someone’s selling a Canon 5D (body only) for $1700. Very tempting.

So far, I’ve resisted the urge to buy any big-ticket items.

I did, however, come across a 28-135mm macro listed for sale only an hour or so before I started browsing. What luck! It wasn’t on my shopping list, but this particular focal length range will be helpful on Saturday. Not to mention it suits my general shooting requirements.

I picked it up after work, having arranged a meeting with the seller at the Eaton Centre’s Apple store. We stood in the walkway over Queen Street and he showed me the macro feature. Bottom line: I felt comfortable with the sale. What I want to avoid is any hot property, and the best way around that is to verify that the seller is an actual photographer who probably bought too many lenses or needs to liquidate assets for an upgrade. No worries there.

I took a bunch of test shots on the way home, and my first impression is the lens is faster than I expected at 135mm. He said it was only a month old, and it looked that way.

    Next step: flash

  3. 46 Seconds of Don Mclean

    August 14, 2007 by Gail

    Don Mclean

This is what happens when you forget to pack spare batteries for the video-enabled digicam. Yes, you miss out on recording “American Pie” sung by Don Mclean in its entirety, although that might entail packing more than a few batteries for this very long song. I showed James how to work the digicam and the dratted thing shut itself down after 30 seconds. I told him to wait a little while and he could probably get another few seconds out of it… which is why there are only 16 seconds or so of chorus after 30 seconds of verse.

    a fan

The crowd in Gage Park went wild for this American classic, though — they were on their feet halfway through the first line of lyrics. I took a couple of pictures of Don Mclean and spent the rest of the song with my back pressed up against the stage, trying to get shots of the people dancing and singing along.
