  1. Snoozing

    May 24, 2007 by Gail

    caught snoozing

I’m wiped out from our BFO (Bereaved Families of Ontario) reunion this evening, seven weeks after the last meeting which I missed as I was enroute to Vancouver. I have lots to say about it, but I’ll save that for a time when my eyelids aren’t so heavy.

  2. There’s Always At Least One

    he likes the attention

… in every neighbourhood, that is. This guy goes around town all year round in a Santa hat and no shirt, pulling stunts like this. When I showed up, he was doing push-ups on top of the fountain jet.

  3. So Far, So Good

    May 22, 2007 by Gail

I took some photos at lunch and on the way home from work to see how the camera performed in various conditions. I’m pleased to see it does pretty well in low light, which I often shoot in:

the camera performs pretty well in low light

The kit lens is 18-55mm, so I checked it out at the widest angle, macro distances, and increasing/decreasing EV.

    Helma

After FedEx delivered the camera yesterday afternoon I wanted to take some test shots before hitting the road. I recruited the one available person, a reluctant subject rather than a volunteer. Kitty was even less willing and disappeared, leaving Helma to be my photo subject in the backyard:

  5. Amy Winehouse

    May 22, 2007 by Gail

When I first heard Amy Winehouse on CBC Radio, I knew I had to listen to the rest of her latest album. Her voice has that world-weary quality I love in music from the 60s from the likes of Aretha Franklin et al, which makes it hard to believe Amy Winehouse is only 23. I downloaded “Back in Black” off iTunes for $7.99, burned it to CD, and put in the player for the trip down to PA.

The CD was on heavy rotation both ways, and I’m still not sick of it. There are a couple of tracks that don’t stand out for me, but most of the songs are catchy and capture different moods.

My favourite track is probably “Back to Black”:

    Followed by “I’m No Good”:

Her voice sounds great live, too:

  6. I Return 900+ Miles Later, With DSLR

    May 22, 2007 by Gail

I spent about an hour at Niagara Falls on the U.S. side taking photos with my new Pentax K100D that I ordered online last Friday and had shipped to Scranton for Monday.

My first DSLR! There’s no post-production in this picture. Not bad, without a tripod.

  7. The Hamilton Spectator Needs a Spellchecker

    May 21, 2007 by Gail

So I’m not going flying (edited) this morning, it’s too windy :( Ah well, at least I got one flight in.

Through a link to my site, I discovered why the QEW was closed on Saturday morning. Directly from the Hamilton Spectator, mistakes* and all:

QEW car accident leaves two seriuosly injured
    By Dana Brown

Niagara-bound traffic was snagged for hours this morning after a two-vehicle collision at the QEW and Fruitland Road.

OPP said the crash happened around 4:15 a.m. Two people were trapped, but were rescued and police closed a chunk of the highway as they investigated the crash.

One of the cars rolled over, OPP said.

Four hours after the crash a tan-coloured car remained on the Fruitland on-ramp, flipped on it’s roof. The driver side of the car appeared to be partially crushed.

OPP said two people suffered serious injuries, but had no word about the extent of those injuries.

As the morning got moving, traffic starting thickening on the service road as people tried to avoid the mess. Some highway drivers already headed for the kilometres-long back up actually to turn around and drive the wrong on the road to steer clear of the scene.

The highway was reopened around 11 a.m., but the ramp stayed closed for some time after that.

    * People of Hamilton! Don’t accept this standard from your newspeople! Errant apostrophes, headline with spelling errors, whole words missing… this article was an affront to my internal spellchecker!

  8. Her Hollyness

    Some metaphotography at Dunmore Cemetery.

    Her Hollyness

I can’t keep my eyes open for much longer after early-morning flying, visiting, driving, an afternoon party, and an impromptu trip to the hospital to see a friend who landed there yesterday. If the weather co-operates I’ll fly again in the morning before a meeting with the estate lawyer, wait for my new camera to arrive by FedEx, and set off for Toronto again.

  9. First Flight of 2007

    Alan and his Super Cub

There isn’t much that can get me out of bed at 6:30 on a Sunday morning… except flying. Alan and I had a windy morning, but was it ever good to get up in the air again!

  10. Go Away!

    May 19, 2007 by Gail

    go away!

Holly and I went shooting at Dunmore Cemetery before they closed at 8:00, and I chased this woodchuck into hiding. I think he gave me the woodchuck equivalent of the finger.

Today Helma finally took the plunge into digital photography, and she merrily went on her way to photograph flowers and trees. Now that she knows how to download and view photos, the rest should come easy. Right, Helma?
