with Kaydee and Kermit

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

I haven’t written much about the weekend because I’m still trying to catch up from it. I’ve also been waiting for a piece of good news, a piece that finally came this evening: Kaydee has been scheduled for surgery tomorrow at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. I drove down over the weekend to see her, and I brought Kermit with me as backup for Operation Smile. I brought the PowerBook, too, the portable photo printer, CDs, the cameras, mylar balloons and whatever else I could haul into her hospital room. I wish I could’ve stayed a little longer, but I had to get back to Toronto for work yesterday.

I’ll write more about this remarkable young lady once I know she’s in the clear.

Meanwhile, we’re rooting for you, Kaydee!

06 Feb 2007 A Bit of Cuba On My Wall

a bit of Cuba on my wall

Artist: Roberto Garcia (it was a copy of a painting, I was informed, but I’ve forgotten who the original painter was… he’s from Ecuador. If anyone knows, please let me know and I’ll add his name)

I bought this painting from an artist with a little studio along the waterfront in Havana. I rolled it up and it survived the journey in my backpack to Toronto, but sat on my dining room table all of January before getting framed last week.

The framers really liked it; they see a lot of Cuban art that tourists bring back from their holidays, but they hadn’t seen anything like this before.

I wanted to buy more from the same artist, but Cuban customs states that any art must be accompanied by an export certificate, and I didn’t get one. I figured they’d let me go with one painting, but not a batch.

One more items to add to my long list of reasons to return to Cuba: buy art!
