  1. Many Thanks to the People of Cuba…

I should’ve used a fill flash here, but I don’t have one for the Pentax. I like the picture, anyway. Pedro said he didn’t like his teeth, but he had such a big grin I couldn’t let it get away.

Although most Cubans don’t have internet connections or computers to read this post (those living on the island, anyway), I’d like to publicly thank them for having such a profoundly positive effect on me while I was visiting their beautiful country. I returned a different person, in many ways.

This post is also to encourage others to visit, especially Americans, who — officially — are not banned from Cuba but are “monetarily discouraged” to travel there by the U.S. Treasury Department and USCIS. I hope my photos inspire others to discover Cuba for themselves.

As I was crouched down in front of this man’s car with my camera, my first impulse was to tell him to button his shirt. But my motto is: “Shoot first, talk later.”

(Amazingly, he didn’t even notice me. Or pretended not to.)
