Track #11 on David’s memorial CD

Our trip in the rented Cessna 172 on December 21 to go flying around northeastern Pennsylvania in David’s memory, from Seamans Airport (9N3) to view the windmills at Waymart, then a pitstop at Cherry Ridge Airport (N30) before returning to Seamans.

UPDATE: If you can’t open the Blip.tv file (MOV format), here’s the YouTube version (lower resolution)

13 Jan 2007 In the Pilot’s Seat

Eric in the pilot's seat

Eric in the pilot’s seat of the Skyhawk we rented on December 21 to go flying in David’s memory. I’m editing the videoclip right now.

The plan is for me to be in the pilot’s seat later this year: on Tuesday I begin ground school, classroom theory for flight training to obtain my private pilot’s license. I joined the Brampton Flying Club today because membership is required when enrolled in their flight school — the club owns the property, facilities, and planes.

How quickly I can get my PPL depends on time and money. Ground school is 45 hours, and I’ll attend on the weeknights when I can make it, and the rest on Saturdays. To make it to a 7 o’clock class on weeknights requires hoofing it home from work, picking up the car and driving west and north with the rest of the commuter traffic… not exactly my cup of tea. We’ll see how it goes, but I have a feeling I’ll stick to Saturdays.

But at least I’m one step closer to getting into the pilot’s seat!

Distillery District

Distillery DistrictI went out after work with some friends and thankfully had a camera with me to take some photos while we were milling about the area east of Yonge Street. The Canon A80’s left selection button isn’t working and it’s messing up my preprogrammed settings (I can only select in one direction!), but I was able to get a few shots of the Distillery District, an historic area of Victorian era industrial architecture. It now houses retail space, restaurants, cafes, theatres, offices, art studios and the like, in 44 buildings, across 13 acres.

I’ll have to return during the day with the Pentax SLR to get the full effect. David’s Panasonic is great for long-range shooting but is terrible in low-light, so I’m wondering whether to fix the Canon A80 or replace it with another inexpensive digicam. I’d love to get a DSLR, but ground school is calling. Flight lessons are not cheap!
