  2. I Am?

    November 22, 2006 by Gail

OK, I can’t remember the last time I carried on a meme, but since this was in an email, I actually answered it and replied.

    I am…

    SpongeBob Squarepants

    SpongeBob Squarepants?

I’m puzzled because I haven’t seen the cartoon. But I guess if my image were made into a gigantic inflatable and floated over thousands upon thousands of people, it must not be all that bad.

Incidentally, I took this photo almost one year ago, at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade last year in New York City (natch). Sadly, I lost all my videoclips from the parade! :( Including the one of Dora the Explorer, which I took especially for Miss Madeleine. Oh well… on with the show…

Thanksgiving Dinner… and HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO THE NEIGHBO(U)RS SOUTH OF THE BORDER. Gorge yourselves silly with the turkey and tofu and gravy or whatever floats your potatoes.

After two years of David’s superb maple brine turkey, I have to say his spoiled me for all others. *sniff* Here’s his recipe, by the way.

Everyone has a personality of a cartoon character. Have you ever asked yourself what cartoon character do you most resemble?

A group of investigators got together and analyzed the personalities of well known and modern cartoon characters. The information that was gathered was made into this test.

Answer all the questions with what describes you best, add up all your points (which are next to the answer that you choose) at the end and look for your results.

Who’d expect to see such brilliant colours materialise from a swamp?

  5. Site Tweaks

    November 21, 2006 by Gail

I should hit the hay already, just wanted to make a note of the upgrade to WordPress 2.0.5 (I think most of the modifications are unnoticeable here, or even with 2.0.4, come to think of it!). I also did some Polaroid-o-nizing for the About page and jimmied the text around a little.

  6. Jalopies and a Half-Frame of Daisies

    November 21, 2006 by Gail

The recent climate havoc on the West Coast and the resulting brown churn of tap water reminded me of my trip over Labour Day weekend to Tofino on Vancouver Island, which was beautiful and oddly serene due to the last-minute water shortage that made the national news and turned most of the tourists away. Which goes to show you can get on the favourable side of a public calamity sometimes.

    2. Daisies at Tofino Botanical Gardens that squeezed in at the end of this film roll, a nice little surprise for which there is no equivalent on a digital memory card. (You either get the whole shot, or nothing at all.)

  8. Context is Everything

    November 20, 2006 by Gail

    20061120.jpg

20061120(001).jpgIn any other situation than a Christmas portrait-sitting this little scenario at Eaton Centre would be downright bizarre.

Yes, it has begun. The emergence of shapes, sizes, colours, and patterns loosely resembling a winter and Christmas theme, mixed with everything and anything else imaginable. No combination is too absurd for the next five weeks. In this case, a purplish ice (?) castle.

I think I’m going to need some Eddie Murphy sketches and hot toddies (glögg! glühwein!) to get me through to January.

  10. City Living

Cameraphone shot, westbound along the Gardiner Expressway.

This is going to sound utterly crazy, but this afternoon was the first time in the 6.5 months I’ve been living in this apartment that I’ve used the swimming pool and hot tub*. Jez used the gym and Berit and Justine used the pool when they were visiting in August, but I never joined them. Today I had the whole facility to myself, and it was heavenly. I started off in the hot tub and after some time in the pool a guy showed up to do laps, and that was all.

The gym (which is adjacent to a mini theatre room) was also empty, and I took a closer look at the machinery. I used to be a gym rat, but it seems like a lifetime ago now. The equipment is state-of-the-art, with a TV monitor at one end. Maybe I can talk myself back into the gym.

I can’t fully articulate why I haven’t used the amenities in this building, other than saying that grief can and will disconnect a person from the outside world, even if the outside world is in the same building. It’s a powerful emotion. I’ve also learned that forcing yourself to engage in activity before you feel comfortable can backfire, pushing the enjoyment further away. But this afternoon when I decided to finally go downstairs, it was with a renewed sense of vigour I hadn’t felt in a long time. This is hopeful.

Maybe winter in Toronto won’t seem quite as cold with a hot tub downstairs.

    * Gigi’s Papa has lived here for THREE years and never used any of the amenities!
