… I am back in Toronto. Rolled into the underground about an hour and a half ago, and the first thing I did was inspect the front of the car for deer carcass. I didn’t hit the deer this time*, that was the random misfortune of a car in front of me, and there were several cars in between that took the major brunt of deer parts flying all over I-81. At first I had no idea where the pink spray was coming from and what was scattered all over the road, I was too busy trying to avoid the large pieces. I saw a car in the fast lane slow down, one of its headlights broken and probably other damage that I couldn’t make out in the dark. This deer must’ve been some size, but the worst part was the SMELL. I can’t describe it, other than burnt flesh — it was truly awful. I felt a bit nauseous for a while afterwards.

On the last trip I barely avoided a mishap from ladders falling off the back of a truck, and I made a quick vow never to follow a vehicle with anything lashed to it. Everyone’s going at least 70 mph (112 kph), and there simply isn’t enough time to dodge everything, especially with vehicles in every lane. If you’re in the middle, there’s nowhere to go.

At least I can say that’s the only item of mention on this return trip, unlike the LAST trip from Pennsylvania a month ago. It’s a long story, but suffice to say I’ll be able to tell the whole sorry tale after December 12.

Good night!

* In 1999, I was driving to catch the ferry from work on the Sunshine Coast to go home to Vancouver, and a big deer leapt directly into my car on the driver’s side. I don’t know if it died because it went crashing into the darkened wood, but it caused $1,400 worth of (insurance) repairs to my Volvo wagon, which was built like a Sherman tank. I’m sure my face was ashen green during the ferry trip and for hours afterwards.
