A Bit of Canadiana For All the Expat Canucks
October 4, 2006 by Gail
Specifically, Neil, Breigh, and the newly-married Tanya. I’m conveniently located near the CBC Shop, purveyors of fine Canadiana for possible Christmas gifts. I’m taking requests!

October 1, 2006Am slowly catching up on correspondence, but it’ll take longer than usual since I’m working full-time again. Today was my first day back at the Ontario ministry I was working for at the end of July and beginning of August. I worked for them only one and a half weeks because Hugh died during my third day of work, and his passing set in motion all my travel plans since then. In that time I went to Pennsylvania and New York four times, New Jersey, Florida, and spent three weeks in Vancouver. I haven’t added up all the mileage, but each road trip was well over 1,000 miles/1,600 kilometres. One can get a great deal of thinking done in such a time.
In the past two months the ministry kept phoning the agency that represents me, so when I finally confirmed that I could resume work this week the agency seemed quite pleased. And when I appeared today in the office, I was surprised at how warmly I was received by everyone I’d worked with before. One manager even commented that she’d been using the Excel tip I’d given her and how well it had been working for her. The operations coordinator who puts together the security badges even told me she’d put in a good word for me. I jumped right back into the World of Acronyms known as government work with my figurative sleeves rolled up, and it looks like there’s plenty of work to keep me busy there for some time.
In other local news, Cat Rescue Part Two last night was a total BUST. Arliin and I spent several hours trying to lure the wandering cats into Hugh’s cage because the old guy who lives in the junkyard was either ignoring us or totally asleep. It was a relatively easier task to lure them in their own yard, but we couldn’t get inside the fence so we had to make do with the sidewalk area — which didn’t work at all. People kept walking by and disturbing our progress, and at one point when I gave in to my hunger pangs and went around the corner for a coffee, Arliin was left to try and close the cage door on her own when two of the cats snuck inside for some food. She wasn’t able to get close enough to close the door while they were inside, so eventually we had to just give up on our mission and try another time when the old guy was home and let us in the fenced yard.
