  3. Power Pose

that's a power pose if I ever saw one
    Pentax K-1000

I was sitting with Maddy in the back of the van enroute to Boston Pizza when she leaned over and said something in my ear. I couldn’t hear her at first because she was speaking in a conspiratorial stage whisper.

    “What did you say, Maddy?”

“Small is powerful,” she whispered firmly, confiding her nearly five-year old wisdom to me.

    I was speechless.

  4. Back in Hogtown

(I finally looked up where the nickname Hogtown came from. It’s not used so often anymore.)

The weather upon leaving Vancouver was magnifique — I tried to take cameraphone shots while the plane was banking (my favourite part of every flight leaving YVR), but one drawback of selecting the exit row on a Boeing 767-200 is that the flight attendants are sitting right next to you and digital devices are verboten at take-off and landing. I tried to be sneaky, but the attendants kept looking out the window towards me and I missed out on capturing the best views. Ah well, this is what I got:

Movie: Thank You For Smoking (by Jason Reitman, Ivan’s progeny)
In-Flight Entertainment: Passenger 19D blatantly trying to seduce Passenger 21C, who happened to be sitting next to me.

I watched in amazement as a guy in the section in front of me trotted back to my row and tried to pick up my seatmate partway through the flight, a man so incredibly brazen that he continued to sit in the aisle to speak to her even while countless people asked him to move out of the way so they could reach the lavatories and flight attendants bumped him with their carts and told him to sit down during periods of turbulence.

His opening line: “Are you famous?”

AND despite the fact that she informed him when the plane began its descent that she had a boyfriend from Windsor picking her up at the airport, he had the nerves of steel to ask her if he could KISS her!

For the record, she enjoyed the attention but there was no aisle kissing, and the most 19D got out of 21C was a touch of the hand as he went to catch his connecting flight.

Rachael’s mum greeted me at the airport with my car that she took the trouble to clean out because it was incredibly filthy, so filthy after countless road trips that it looks like one of those cars you see abandoned by the wayside. She Armour-All’ed the interior so well I could barely get a decent grip on the wheel. Thanks for all your efforts, Mother Ashe! I think this calls for an outing on me!

Am home in one piece after driving through steady rain and some big accidents along Airport Road and the Gardiner Expressway, thankfully on the other side. Now I’m going to have a cup of tea while I try and rescue the plants that nearly perished while I was away, including my little tree that lost more than half of its leaves.
