It might seem like a bizarre way to start Saturday, but I went to Richmond to watch cars get crushed and shredded to bits.
It was the September edition of the “Secrets of the City Tour” hosted by John Atkin, one of the “secrets” being that you don’t know where you’re going… we ended up at Richmond Steel on Mitchell Island, where we were given a tour of the operations and watched as heavy machinery made mincemeat of what were once household appliances and vehicles.
More pics of Richmond Steel here, the global Flickr tag is here.
The segue from heavy metals to Deep Cove was Jason kindly running me downtown in his car so I could meet Rachael, Jamie, and Bill to catch a bus towards Mt. Seymour. (I suppose that was as good a segue as any!)
After some food that I didn’t take photos of (hunger made me forget) and sending Hendrik bizarre text messages, we headed up the part of the Baden-Powell trail that arrives at the cliff overlooking Deep Cove and Indian Arm. We were rewarded for our vertical climb by a panoramic view of the area around Mount Seymour.
The most it did was drizzle while we were hiking down, but it turned into a full-fledged downpour thankfully once we were on our way back to Vancouver. Finally the forecast was right! But the ground’s been parched lately, so I’m not complaining. It’s what keeps BC green.

And of course, what Vancouver post would be complete without the food shots! These were taken at Chutney Villa on Broadway near Main, where we were joined by Joanna and indulged in the flavours of South India.
