28 Aug 2006 Sunday on the Sunshine Coast

It was a fantastic day to be on the Sunshine Coast! So far I’ve only got the cameraphone pics uploaded, but the full photoset is here:

When Rachael and I got on the ferry, I was astounded to discover that BC Ferries had completely refitted the vessel! Rachael hadn’t been on the Queen of Surrey before, and I tried to explain to her how grim it was… five years of the commuting grimness had worn on me, and seeing the ferry in its newly-renovated state made me feel like I was on a whole new ship. It was bizarre because I still recognised nearly all the ferry workers and the overall structure of the ship was unchanged, but the interior had undergone a complete overhaul.

When we arrived at the house/office, I was greeted by major renovations THERE, too! I still have photos of the building while it was being finished, before landscaping, before the new deck and hot tub, before the downstairs suite even had appliances.

After a hearty lunch, we headed down to the beach and I tried to get some action shots from the pier of Kevin and the kids diving off the float. (I’ll upload those later.) We had some drinks at their friend’s beach house in Hopkins Landing and watched the kids perform daring stunts off the swingset before heading into Gibsons for a boat ride that departed from the marina.

It was a great deal: $30 (TOTAL, not per person!) for a 45 minute excursion around the harbour. The boat holds up to 12 passengers. We gawked at houses on Keats Island and enjoyed a fine summer afternoon on the water before Rachael and I caught the 7:20 ferry back to Vancouver. I indulged in a White Spot burger on the crossing to Horseshoe Bay, and fell asleep in the middle of uploading photos. I gave up and went to bed!

It was fabulous to see Danielle, Ashley, and little AJ again — who isn’t so little anymore and speaks very properly, like a man in a toddler’s body!

Before I booked my flight to Vancouver, I resisted the urge to get my hair cut so I could go back to my regular hair stylist, a Japanese lady who works out of her home. She’s been cutting my hair for years and knows my kinks and cowlicks. She also uses a certain thinning technique that’s more effective than anyone else’s I’ve seen. When you’ve got hair as thick and as unruly as mine, this makes an enormous difference! On Saturday it was such a relief to get rid of half a headful of hair!

The stylist has two kids, two dogs, and at least one cat, so stopping by for a haircut guarantees a lively visit.
