I spoke this morning to another research coordinator regarding a study on the causes and effects of depression on cancer patients and caregivers, specifically on the immune system. I made an appointment for a month in the future because the research has a long list of qualifying criteria and medical conditions, but frankly I’m just pleased to qualify and participate. I have a vested interest in the subject matter, so I wasn’t sure if I qualified for the control group since I’m in bereavement counselling for being a caregiver and widow of a cancer patient. However, I haven’t been diagnosed as clinically depressed, nor have I ever taken medication of any kind since David passed away. Amazingly, not even cold or flu medication — my immune system has held up under incredible stress, which is a phenomenon that’s actually part of the study. As I answered some screening questions, I hoped each answer wouldn’t disqualify me, since I would like to be a part of the data collection (which includes blood samples and a 45-minute interview) and discuss the findings with a researcher.
After some discussion about the purpose of the study, I’m really looking forward to the appointment — needles notwithstanding. In the meantime, I have to make sure I continue to stay healthy, not just for health’s sake but so I don’t inadvertently postpone the appointment! If you’re interested in participating, contact Madeline Lee at: (416) 340-4800 extension 6933. The study is quite involving and has a lengthy list of requirements, but the appointment itself is about two hours long and takes place at the Princess Margaret Hospital. I will write more about it when the time comes.
