  1. Reunited With Vandigicam: Portrait Throwdown III

    August 31, 2006 by Gail

Tonight was my first Vandigicam event since Code Blue a year ago. Vandigicam’s grown a lot since last summer, and I knew maybe half of the bunch who turned up at the Inukshuk at English Bay, but everyone was very friendly and a good sport about having their photo taken. Me, I’m still a bit squirmy about being on the receiving side of the lens, but Mark made me laugh and put me at ease. See, I even like this photo!

The crowd piled into La Bodega afterwards and I stayed late chatting with Bill, Jason, and Matt until we were subtly nudged out the door. It’s good to be back with the Vandigicam crew!

[Update: Sunday, Sep 3 -- put together a photoset for the Portrait Throwdown. A work in progress.]

  2. Birds of a Feather… Do a Cacophony Make

    August 30, 2006 by Gail

    birds of a feather...

Continuing my habit of taking photos of people’s pets, I introduce you to the inhabitants of Socar‘s Packbawky Palace (in no particular order): Mr. Snagglebeak, Mr. Yellow, Miss White and Miss Blue. If there’s one thing Socar’s apartment needs, it’s a gigantic 24/7 vacuum that reduces the volume of feathers floating about the place. Perhaps a device that won’t compete with the squawking, either.

20060829(001).jpgAnd continuing my habit of taking photos of people and food, I present Frits as he tries to look completely nonchalant. Despite his attempt at dissuading me from Japanese food and vehemently stating that he doesn’t do sushi, I took him to a Japanese eatery and ordered plates that were consumed without his usual serving of dubiousness. Oh wait, is that a pig flying???

  4. Around Vancouver

Lana and I ate and shopped and walked our way around downtown and the West End yesterday, hitting some of our favourite spots like Sala Thai and Caffe Artigiano. Bin 941 was packed as usual, so we grabbed a nightcap and tapas-style nosh at Lickerish a couple of doors down.

While meandering, I noted new shops and eateries and played the typical Vancouver game of “What was there before?” I’m usually not too shabby at this game, but this time I might’ve only remembered 50% of the previous tenants. Vancouver does transience better than any other city I know.

  5. Sunday on the Sunshine Coast

    August 28, 2006 by Gail

It was a fantastic day to be on the Sunshine Coast! So far I’ve only got the cameraphone pics uploaded, but the full photoset is here:

When Rachael and I got on the ferry, I was astounded to discover that BC Ferries had completely refitted the vessel! Rachael hadn’t been on the Queen of Surrey before, and I tried to explain to her how grim it was… five years of the commuting grimness had worn on me, and seeing the ferry in its newly-renovated state made me feel like I was on a whole new ship. It was bizarre because I still recognised nearly all the ferry workers and the overall structure of the ship was unchanged, but the interior had undergone a complete overhaul.

When we arrived at the house/office, I was greeted by major renovations THERE, too! I still have photos of the building while it was being finished, before landscaping, before the new deck and hot tub, before the downstairs suite even had appliances.

20060827(012).jpgOf course, the mega-steep driveway was still there, but there’s a less-steep driveway below the multiplex now.

After a hearty lunch, we headed down to the beach and I tried to get some action shots from the pier of Kevin and the kids diving off the float. (I’ll upload those later.) We had some drinks at their friend’s beach house in Hopkins Landing and watched the kids perform daring stunts off the swingset before heading into Gibsons for a boat ride that departed from the marina.

It was a great deal: $30 (TOTAL, not per person!) for a 45 minute excursion around the harbour. The boat holds up to 12 passengers. We gawked at houses on Keats Island and enjoyed a fine summer afternoon on the water before Rachael and I caught the 7:20 ferry back to Vancouver. I indulged in a White Spot burger on the crossing to Horseshoe Bay, and fell asleep in the middle of uploading photos. I gave up and went to bed!

It was fabulous to see Danielle, Ashley, and little AJ again — who isn’t so little anymore and speaks very properly, like a man in a toddler’s body!

  6. Haircut Relief!

    August 28, 2006 by Gail

    20060826(007).jpg 20060826(006).jpg

Before I booked my flight to Vancouver, I resisted the urge to get my hair cut so I could go back to my regular hair stylist, a Japanese lady who works out of her home. She’s been cutting my hair for years and knows my kinks and cowlicks. She also uses a certain thinning technique that’s more effective than anyone else’s I’ve seen. When you’ve got hair as thick and as unruly as mine, this makes an enormous difference! On Saturday it was such a relief to get rid of half a headful of hair!

The stylist has two kids, two dogs, and at least one cat, so stopping by for a haircut guarantees a lively visit.

  9. Michael and Me

    August 27, 2006 by Gail

This post brought to you by a long afternoon nap and a grande latte.

Some goofy cameraphone self-portraits of my (only) nephew and me, in the back of my father’s car after church. We celebrated Michael’s birthday one week early because we’ll all be out of town and in different locations.

    20060826(022).jpg 20060826(027).jpg

Self-portraiture with a cameraphone is harder than it looks, by the way, especially since I’m accustomed to using my swivel LCD for this purpose. All pics from the photo session are here.

Michael is turning six years old, and he really impressed me with his reading level today. He’s been doing well in school and it’s exciting to see such tremendous growth in all the kidlets after a year of being away from them (except for Melissa’s weekend in Pennsylvania for our wedding in October).

This afternoon while Michael and I waited for my dad out in the parking lot, the boy pointed out every airplane in the sky. David would’ve had such fun teaching them all about aerospace and rocketry, I thought to myself. I told Michael that I went to Kennedy Space Center a few weeks ago and saw the shuttle Atlantis out on the launch pad. I didn’t say David’s name, but Michael has always had a superb memory and I’m sure he remembers David bringing aerospace-related gifts for them at Christmas in 2004 and talking about airplanes. I’m sure in future those memories will fade, but I hope it isn’t for a long time yet.

  10. Introducing Parker Hopkins

Tosca and Mike arrived home from the hospital around lunchtime today, and I rolled up a few hours later, cameras in tow. I didn’t bring the USB cable — argh! — so I’m just uploading cameraphone pics for now and will do the rest later. Little Parker is all of two days old, born midday on August 23.

Welcome to the outside world, Parker!
