Neil‘s expatriated himself over to the U.K. from Vancouver since the spring, and this recent shot of his reminded me of last week, when I saw an original mini car zipping south along Jarvis Street with two big blokes in the front. The number plate?

  2. Gail’s Impromptu Night Tour of Toronto

    June 26, 2006 by Gail

    – or,

“That Was Fun, But I Have No Photographic Evidence!”

Not long ago I returned home from a whirlwind car tour of Toronto with Ben, who I met over a year ago, VandigicamPhotoWalking in Kitsilano and Jericho Beach. I chuckled on the way home, because it was so impromptu, and the look on Ben’s face when I showed up at the airport after 1 o’clock in the morning.

It started out with a voicemail from Rachael, but I was on the Vancouver VoIP phone when the call forwarded through to my Toronto phone number. It didn’t occur to me until later to listen to the message. Much later.

    I heard:

“Ben… Washington… this week… Toronto… between one and six in the morning… coffee at airport…”

I listened to it again to figure out when this week. I was a little confused because she said arriving 12:45pm, but I figured I could just contact her to confirm which night this was happening. I read about the Washington trip on Ben’s blog the other day, but he didn’t mention when he was leaving, either.

I sent a text about quarter to midnight my time, 8:45 PST: “Got your msg–which day?”

SMS Shortly after, she sent a return SMS:

I did a little double-take at the word. Then the time.

Due to land in six minutes! I phoned Rachael and said I was on my way, then headed off to the airport, sending Ben an SMS telling him I was coming.

In the wee hours the Gardiner Expressway is an empty ribbon of concrete, so I cleared it in no time. Ben — less a beard and the pair of glasses I’d always seen him wearing before — was surprised to see me, but I’d assured him I’d given the Nacht Tour of Vancouver many a time. The main difference was, I’d lived in Vancouver for nearly 10 years but I was still not much more than a longtime tourist in Toronto.

  4. Thanks Frans Peter

Back on the last day of 2005, I was fighting my way through a blinding snowstorm, trying to get my cousin to the coach terminal in Stroudsburg, then Mount Pocono, so she could catch her flight to Vancouver from JFK.

Meanwhile, thousands of kilometres away in The Netherlands, Frans Peter Verheyen posted a photo in David’s memory, a simple shot taken over the skies of Holland a few days before.

I’ve seen this shot many times, but I thought I’d post it here. Thanks, Frans Peter.

  6. Like a True Gemini…

    June 24, 2006 by Gail

… I have all sorts of unfinished things that I’d like to complete today: e-mail in various stages of composition, experimental plugins half-tweaked, shelves partially dusted, ‘To Do’ lists with not many items checked off, megabytes of unprocessed photos — the usual.

But I got a real boost today: the new owner of our Piper Tri-Pacer contacted me. The kind of letter that did, on its very own, make great strides in strengthening my faith in the conscientiousness of people. I’ve had other examples of that this week, but this e-mail made such a difference that I wanted to mention it here.

    Writing is a powerful thing.

    The plane is good hands.

I have a standing invitation to fly in Zero-Two-Papa again, and this offer is worth more to me than a winning lottery ticket.

In other, far more mundane news, I have been tweaking again. (Gemini, remember?) New stuff you may or may not have noticed:

    • Links page – revamped, with new categories, new order, and credits for this website
    • Photography page – revamped, with page template tweaks, friendly URLs, etc. (am toying with a different Flickr/Wordpress plugin, but am sticking with this for now)
    • Brian’s Latest Comments – on the sidebar; the shade indicates the relative newness of the latest comments for that post; I’ve set it to show the last three commenters; it’s easy to see if there have been comments after yours
    • About – expanded David’s section
    • Videoclips – reorganised into sections and all with preview images

Over the years I’ve learned that websites are like homes: never truly finished.

  7. For Sale: One NAUGHTY, NAUGHTY Cat

    June 23, 2006 by Gail

    vanity shot for feline soap

Hugh is driving me BONKERS this week. Every day, it’s been a virtual flood of revenge pee. Ever since I started letting Hugh wander the hallway, he’s been OBSESSED with it, and if I don’t let him wander, I end up cleaning. Over and over. It’s one of the reasons why I had to move into a place with in-suite laundry — I was washing rags and cleaning towels in the bathtub, and I just couldn’t keep up. It would be alright if he would wander and be satisfied, but he goes in and out. In. Out. In. Out. Caterwaul: “Let me out!” Out. In. Out. Caterwaul. Pee.

This is what it’s come to: Hugh is looking for novel ways to drive me to insanity, and I’m looking for novels ways to write up a Craigslist ad to foist His Peefulness on to another household.

Anyone want a 15-year old tuxedo cat who eats expensive food and takes a pill every day and is incredible messy (food and litter) and won’t cover his business but won’t go in his litterbox unless it’s pristine?

    Yeah, I thought so.

  10. Imagine Waking Up to This!

    June 22, 2006 by Gail

You’d want to go back to sleep, that’s what.

A commercial for Folger’s coffee, shown here, linked from Andrew Coyne. Somebody at Saatchi & Saatchi, New York, must’ve had some Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory meets Up With People nightmares.
