  1. I’ve Gone Legit

    February 19, 2006 by Gail

As of today, I’m no longer part of the mid-town Toronto Bandwidth Thievery Corporation. Cable modem was installed today, much earlier than anticipated, and if one day I meet Mike or Brian in this building, I will silently thank them for being generous (or blissfully ignorant) enough not to put encryption on their wi-fi.

The PowerBook is finally Tigered up (ROWR) and software upgraded thanks to Dax, although he rightly argues my use of the term ‘legit’. (Er, yes, but shhhhh…)

  2. Dear David: Month Two

    February 18, 2006 by Gail

    chummy

    Dear David,

It’s been two months since you’ve been gone and the world is such a different place without you.

I still have visions of you rounding the corner to tell me everything will be alright. You were always good at giving comfort and understanding, but now I have to find that on my own. I’m sure you would say, “But you’re not alone, Gail” — which is true, I have good friends who care for me, but even after a pleasant evening in their company I still go home and stare at the walls because a part of me died with you that day. I mourn for you, but also for us.

  3. David at 17: Frost

    February 18, 2006 by Gail

(I took this photo a year ago, at the back of the house in Pennsylvania.)

    Journal 11/8 (1984) – Frost

During the summer, frost is pretty and makes pictures on your windowpane but in winter it’s the nasty stuff you have to scrape off your car windows. I had to scrape some off this morning, because no matter how pretty the pictures are, you have to see out. If there really is some little Jack Frost guy who paints the pictures, he should be locked up for the winter.

The weather here in Toronto has been all over the map. Today and yesterday the windchill factor was beastly, but a couple of days ago it was warm enough to ditch the scarf, and a couple of nights ago we walked home through pouring rain — accompanied by thunder AND lightning! — that turned the snow to slush. Snow that fell only the day before!

  4. It’s Been a Long Day

    February 17, 2006 by Gail

I FINALLY obtained a copy of the lease agreement today, which allows me to put everything else in motion — services, identification, et cetera.

While I was at Eaton Centre for aforementioned business, I got a phone call from Germany. I won’t get into it now, but it was shocking news. If it wasn’t Friday rush hour in downtown Toronto and I wasn’t surrounded by pedestrians, I would’ve gone on autopilot and crossed the street without looking. I found the nearest lobby (a bank) and was on the phone for an hour.

As it was, I had to get my picture taken a few times today, so I had to gather myself again for those and to get through the requisite government forms. (more…)

  5. Why I Kiboshed Bell

    February 17, 2006 by Gail

I put in an online order for Bell’s landline service so I could also order their DSL.

I had Roger’s cable service briefly in Vancouver, and it was horrible, so I switched to Telus ADSL and had that for years. Years of smooth sailing, until some colossal blunders in 2004. I had incredibly good fortune with their wireless service, though, so I am not anti-Telus everything. But I do still remember the shoddy cable internet service from Rogers, even though the technician hooked me up with free cable TV until customer service figured it out months later. By then, I decided I wasn’t watching enough of this free cable TV to keep putting up with the horrible internet service.

So I decided to get a stripped-down, very basic phone service with Bell ($15.95 for landline plus three features) and get their Sympatico DSL service. I’d never dealt with Bell before, because Telus had the landline monopoly and Bell had only broken into the Western telecom market in recent years with wireless service.

I submitted the online phone service order last night and was pleased to see a prompt e-mail this morning from Bell. (more…)

  7. Toronto Flickr Meetup @ The Red Room

    February 16, 2006 by Gail

Perchance, I was reading the Toronto forum on Flickr to see if they’d had a meetup in February yet, and noticed that it was scheduled for the 16th! I decided to go.

This is the first Flickr-based event I’ve attended since Vandigicam: Code Blue on August 4th, the day before David phoned me from the hospital. I flew East, and didn’t attend any Philadelphia or New York Flickr meetups. I went to one Northeast Photography Club meeting, the first week of December.

I wasn’t 100% sure I felt like mingling with strangers (which can make for awkward questions), but I talked myself into going, and asked China if she wanted to come along (which reinforced my commitment to going). (more…)

  9. See the Sun

    February 16, 2006 by Gail

The weekend before last, I was driving through torrential rain along the I-476 in Pennsylvania, listening to music from my iPod via the car stereo. This song came on, and the lyrics echoed in my mind as I replayed our last flight together, the brilliance of the setting sun before us as we approached the runway beside the Susquehanna River.

I’ve watched this clip many times, to simulate the feeling of watching the sun set from our little airplane. I love flying during sunsets — their beauty seems to go on forever due to altitude. Time stands still.

  10. The Tree

    February 15, 2006 by Gail

Deep roots are not reached by the frost
    – J.R.R. Tolkien

In memory of Eileen Perry (1947-1996) whose dedication and friendship will always be remembered by her Ontario Public Service Colleagues.

    June 24, 1997

I came across this tree and memorial plaque walking along Queen’s Park South. I mulled over the Tolkien quote for a while as I continued north.
