Dax arrived last night to help me move, and Hugh’s taken to him pretty quickly, as you can see here. They’re on a break — or rather, Hugh waited for Dax to take a break so the Master of the House of Fielding can get a break from being ignored.

A State of Managed Chaos
February 27, 2006 by Gail
Taken yesterday in front of the 9/11 Memorial on Staten Island. My face is frozen solid here, as the winds are ABSOLUTELY GLACIAL.
Like my hair, things are a bit wild at the moment. Arrived back from New York near midnight, and have been running around today with phone in hand. In future, if anyone reading this needs advice on exporting a car from the United States and importing it into Canada, I would be glad to give you my two cents. I won’t bore the rest of you to tears with the (many) details, only to mention that I can’t register the car in Canada without a deregistration stamp from the American authorities on the back of the title, and there are all sorts of hoops to jump through before that can take place. It sounds like the two agencies work together, but I can tell you they do not!!
The New York trip was fun with a capital F, but now it’s back to the business at hand: moving. Anyone want to trade lives for a while?

Who Says New Yorkers Aren’t Friendly?
February 26, 2006 by Gail
Why, just today (er, yesterday, now) I met a mute but expressive Blue Man and a chirpy Bird, both most engaging. Recap forthcoming. For now, today’s crop of pics.

MoMA, NYC
February 25, 2006 by Gail
Can barely keep my eyes open at the moment, so I’ll keep it brief. Things are grand here at the Grand Hyatt in New York City, and the hotel bed is looking very inviting after a full day of walking around, taking photos and visiting the Museum of Modern Art. Worked up a real appetite by the time we finished cruising MoMA, resulting in ‘eyes-bigger-than-stomach’ ordering at Hatbat Korean restaurant on 34th. Well worth it, though — we doggy-bagged.
Uploaded some photos to Flickr, here’s the batch thus far.

Packing Blues
February 23, 2006 by Gail
A friend came over to help me pack the kitchen and tackle the library in the office this evening, which made an enormous difference because there are literally hundreds of books that needed boxing and I might’ve given up partway through if I had to do it by myself. David was a VORACIOUS reader, and had amassed volumes online over the years to add to his growing collection of science fiction, aerospace, design, and reference books. We separated them by category, and ran out of boxes. In the main bedroom, there are FIVE unmarked boxes of books that haven’t been opened since David moved them here from the farmhouse in 2001. I have no idea what kind of books they are, but I really can’t be bothered to open them — the idea of UNpacking only to pack them again is offputting. I’m inclined to leave them as a surprise for later.
If space was not an issue, I’d keep everything. In fact, I’d fetch my boxes from Vancouver and add my books to the library — the more, the merrier! — but it would engulf the apartment and I’d have to sleep in the kitchen. Even so, I look at an aviation book and admire its artwork/photography and say, “We-l-l-l-l, maybe I’ll keep this one…” What I wouldn’t give for a DEN!
Despite all the work that’s going on in the House of Fielding, you’d never know it. Most of the contents of a house are behind a closet or cupboard door or in a drawer, so even once they’re emptied piles of boxes and stuff remain in sight. It’s NEVERENDING!

Sunrise Over Lake Ontario
February 21, 2006 by Gail
I’m back in Pennsylvania, and knackered beyond all measure. Arrived this afternoon after taking the longest to get through customs out of everyone on the coach (that left at 06:45!), but the important part is I made it through. And all I brought back was this lousy cameraphone pic.
I’m happy to be sleeping in my own bed tonight with a purring Hugh. Now, as long as he doesn’t pee on me… z-z-z-z-zzzz…
