The Great Bung-Out of 2006

January 29, 2006 by Gail

It continues. And it continues to amaze me… what with its sheer volume, and all. But I’m beginning to see the bedroom carpet again, so it looks like I’m making progress.

Some things I don’t know what to do with yet. For example, I found a largish box of Star Wars paraphernalia, with parts of R2D2 and pieces of spacecraft. But then there are the action figures — a 14-inch tall Han Solo staring at me, daring me to put him on eBay.

“Go on, sister,” in his sultry young Harrison Ford voice.

“Just try and auction me off. You know you want to keep me.”

Well, sure I do, Han. I might’ve been five years old when you hit the big screen, and you’re currently dating a woman who has to shop in the children’s department at Saks, but you’re still my favourite intergalactic character.

The box o’ Star Wars remains at one side, until further notice.

Then there’s the giant tote of t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies — with logos, natch: Penn State, Kappa Sigma (David was a frat boy), airplanes, bicycles, racing, lifeguarding, and some with references which baffle me.

I saved the 3-D comic book, with 3-D glasses in the centrefold.

I also found this drawing he’d done and taped up somewhere. There’s no context to it, so I have no idea if it was for a college art project or just for fun.

I cancelled all of David’s subscriptions last month, but I have boxes and boxes of probably every magazine he’d ever received (and then some). They’re currently in the basement and in the middle of the kitchen floor awaiting their fate, which is as yet undecided.

Do you have any plans for all the wonderful mementos that David kept? It must be so hard for you to go through everything. Bittersweet.

I’m keeping as much as I can (within reason, and space constraints), but I’m trying to organise it all. The bits of paper are going into binders, the photos and negatives and slides together in one box, that kind of thing. The reason why everything’s taking so long is that it’s all loose and mixed together, so I have to

    a) sift out the garbage, then
    b) gather similar materials together, then
    c) put it in order, then
    d) put it away.

It’s taking forever! But I’m learning a lot of trivia-type info about David in the meantime, when I stop to examine things or even skim.

  3. [...] In other news, I was surprised to see in the guestbook today that the two latest entries are from David’s fraternity brothers. Yes, David was a frat boy and I’ve heard lots of stories, many of them unrepeatable. I’ve even got some of his Kappa Sigma memorabilia from Penn State that survived The Great Bung-out of 2006, including clothing in typical 1980s garish colours. Those are downstairs in the storage locker, but I might just dig them back up again to take some photos. [...]

  4. [...] I’ve mentioned before that David belonged to a fraternity at Penn State; many a yarn was spun from that time in his life. I’m sure some (Greek — ha!) mythology slipped into David’s stories, too, considering how many years had passed. Not to mention whatever clarity they might have had at the time. [...]
