  1. Hugh and I Begin a New Year

(Hugh and his new friend, a gift from an aunt in Vancouver.)

I’ll admit, sleep didn’t exactly come easily on New Year’s Eve. After the treacherous drive through the snow squall on Saturday, the last thing I wanted to do was go back out again for any city celebrations. So I stayed in and listened to the fireworks, instead. No more tempting fate!

When it came time to call it a night, I had to make a decision about where to sleep. I wanted to sleep in a bed instead of the couch, which is a little cramped with Hugh moving around. When he jumps down, he has a tendency to use my upper body as a launching pad.

For the past two weeks I’ve been sleeping on the couch (which is covered in plastic) so Hugh could sleep there, too; I wasn’t about to take chances with his old age incontinence and the new bed in the master bedroom. I passed out in the recliner on Friday night, and apparently Hugh climbed right onto my chest there, too, says Allan and Tosca. But I’m not about to make that a regular sleeping place. Nor am I ready to sleep in the main bed yet. I wasn’t ready to sleep in the spare bed either — that’s where David had been sleeping for the past couple of months because it was softer on his sore bones. I thought of it as the “sick room” because David spent so much time there. But it has a plastic sheet on it. Here? There? Here? There? Where??? (more…)
