We interrupt my late-night housecleaning to bring to you a shot of the River Liffey in a poetic moment…

… or, a moment Darren Barefoot describes as “bucolic”. (Click on the pic to see comments.)

This was taken 10 years after yesterday’s Belfast photos, at Easter in 2003. It’s an unretouched photo, i.e., it came straight off the digicam’s memory card and not colour-corrected or enhanced. I don’t think I’ve taken a sunset photo with anything close to those shades since — the quality of light is unusual.

  2. Streets of Belfast

    From the archives: March 1993.

I was 20 and in Ireland for the first time, starting off in Belfast and heading south to Dublin for St. Patrick’s Day.

Areas of the city had been bombed to ruins and heavily guarded 24 hours a day. I don’t think I’d ever seen so many armoured vehicles around a city before.
